Quartzsite, AZ gtg January 19, 2013 (update)

I have decided to move down onto the Colorado River right on the water near the Parker Dam on the California side. I always wanted to stay there and kayak on the river. The cliffs jut right up off the water there and it's quite scenic. My site is backed up right onto the river...so hope the "upstream" dam doesn't break and the "creek don't rise"

But, it's a pleasant drive from Parker to Quartzsite so I plan to come for the get together too. I haven't been on the forum too much these past months...but you'll just have to put up with me at the get together anyway....

Just thought I would mention that when you head south about 1/2 mile, or so, from the hwy 95 and hwy 10 intersection in teen tiny Quartzsite the first BLM brick entrance building (small about 10' x 12') where the American Flag flies...where they take your fees is so very close to where Sheila used to park that if you stopped your truck there and honked your horn it could be heard from where Sheila used to park....so it's very easy to find. Once you get to Quartzsite you will see how simple it is to get around there...

So far there are so fewer people here this year than last year....just an amazing drop. But, of course, Jan and Feb will have more arrivals. Today it has rained off and on and tonight starting early evening it has rained virtually non-stop...the smell of the wet creosote bushes from the rain is just HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...YUCK!But, it was a fun raining and windy day...so unusual for here...I enjoyed it.

And I'll only be about an hour from where you'll be going for spring training ... and Ava even closer ... so I'm guessing, if you're interested, you can have a couple gtg's - with Sheila and Kerry in Q, then with Ava and me near Spring Training ... and who knows who else might be around

Susan, wondering if you have a specific team you come to spring training for. I am a Mariners fan and if I go for any length of time, I will stay in Surprise. Otherwise, I am parked about 35 miles east of Quartzsite on Hwy 60.

Anita, I'm a Cubs fan and Giants Fan. I'll be in Mesa. Unless I've misread the schedule (which is entirely possible )both teams play the Mariners twice.

Yes, it would be great if you came to stay next to me! But, you say it needs to be boondocking? I am staying at http://www.echolodgeresort.com and it's full hookups. I use the term "resort" loosely as it is a bit older and seen better days. I just always wanted to stay on that pretty part of the river. I would never stay at a "resort" per se, but when I was exploring the area I pulled in to look and asked on a "lark" what their rate was and it was only $299, which is unheard of along the river there; way down from what is stated on their website rates. I will ask them on Tuesday when I get there what the daily rate is...maybe it's way down too. Weird thing is, no one is there except two or three RV's....maybe more will arrive in Jan and Feb...But I think the resort is hurting for RVers so that's why the price reduced. BTW,when you look it up on the Internet the resort will look all fancy in their website but it's nothing special and pretty run down.

The resort is about 45 miles from Quartzsite. You drive about 32 miles north from Quartzsite to the town of Parker. There you cross the Colorado River to the California side and drive 12 miles north along the river to the resort.

The few times I have driven by there while exploring I always came upon wild burros...they are simply the cutest critters....they are all over around that particular stretch of river...left behind and escapees from old prospectors and miners back at the turn of the century...so cute!!!

Wow! How did I not know this was going on??? Wish I coold be there--I lived in Mesa for 10 years, 2 blocks from the C-bs spring training camp! Bt, alas, I'm on the east coast now & won't be in AZ til mid Feb--AFTER the FL GTG!!!! Hmm, maybe I can join some of the mini's with those of yew who live or winter there?? Woold that be great??? FL GTG to AZ GTG within weeks??!!!! Will keep tabs on this one!

I just wandered out to the Echo Lodge Web site.....it says "No Pets" down in the lower print.....That might be a deal breaker for many of us. Sitting right there along the river does look attractive but not as nice if they don't permit furry companions.

I saw that about no pets but wonder if that doesn't go with their rentals. Surely a place that needs business would allow pets in the RV sites.

Let me know if they have a discounted rated. I'm really counting Pennies right now. And about the pet thing. If no pets, no me. Then will just go straight to Q, not add those extra miles.

Finally enough people have left that I'm able to get on for a short time before I get booted. Just wanted to let you know that I'll post directions when I get home...probably Thurs. Then anyone that wants to can pm me and I'll send you my phone number, you can call me when you get checked in at the ranger station (for those that are camping out on the BLM land) and I'll come get you and lead you in.

The "NO PETS" refers to the TRAILER RENTALS ONLY not RV's ...there are double and single wide permanent trailers there by the dozens and of course the owners rent them out. It simply isn't possible to have RVers without pets...I am sure I am the only RVer that has no pets. I want a cat very much and am working on it. Tried to pick one up on Lake Havasu that was declawed (since I won't do that to an animal) it was already done so I thought I could give it a home that where it stays "inside" most of the time and only outside with harness, little net tent, and supervision....but someone beat me too it.
