An Oldy, But Goody..Knitted Checkerboard Slippers

Postby rvgrammy1953 » Thu Dec 20, 2012 11:23 am

These are the knitted slippers I told you about.....My Mom made these for us and many others for years....There are many uses for the slippers...house slippers, winter boot inserts, and warm footies for bed.....The large pair are for men, and in this case the other 2 pair are ladies or youth sizes....there is also a child size...

Pattern for Checkerboard Slippers

2 colors of yarn 3 or 4 weight - A & B as indicated below

No. 6 size knitting needles

With your color A....

Child size: Cast on 48 sts.

Women size: Cast on 60 sts.

Men size: Cast on 72 sts.

Row 1: knit across with color A

Row 2:Pick up Color B and knit 6 sts. then pick up A and knit 6 sts. repeat across.

Row 3: Pearl same colors across

Repeat rows 2 & 3 for total of 6 rows.

Then pick up alternate color ( if 1st 6 sts. are color A then start over that with color B)

Repeat rows 6 more times

Alternate in this way until you reach desired length....(child size -6 sets of 6 rows, women size - 8 or 9 sets of 6 rows, men size - 9-11 sets of 6 rows.)

To finish: last row pearl across with both colors together, leaving about 8-12 inches of yarn....then with yarn or darning needle, thread both yarns threw the loops on knitting needle, pulling tight to form toe, stitch toe and continue top of slipper half way. (child size - 3 sets of 6, etc..for other sizes) tie off...then with about 8-10 inches of yarn and having slipper inside out, sew up the heel of slipper....tie off....then turn slipper right side out.....Wha la ! you have a knitted checkerboard slipper.. ;) :D

If you have any questions, just let me know.....enjoy!!

They are very pretty and look warm. Clever idea for gifts.

I remember those knitted socks from when I was a kid. I remember they were really warm and comfortable. Good job, Lori. They are really cute.

Those look so warm and comfy. Wish I had a pair tonight as the temps go lower and lower and lower :P

Every Christmas my mom used to make me a new pair and I loved them. I'm afraid with all my wood floors now I'd slip and break my neck but at least my feet would be warm.

I remember these from when I as a kid. Have thought many times of getting a pattern and making some. I'll make a few pairs for our 2013 December church craft sale and some for family memebers. Thanks for posting
