On my way to New Mexico

Postby lak99 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 8:58 pm

Well I started off on my first real trip one month ago. And I have already traveled
over 2,200 miles. I met with Carol (Carolinagal) at Meriwether Lewis for 2 days and
it was really fun......if I hadn't drained my battery.....but then that is another story.

Yesterday I had a flat tire in the middle of NOWHERE Texas....somewhere between
Fort Stockton and El Paso. After 5 hours on the shoulder my kitties and I were a wreck.
I am currently in El Paso and will leave on Wednesday for Silver City, New Mexico.
Anyone near that area? Any suggestions on what to see?

I workamped at the KOA in Silver City a couple of years. There is a "ghost" town which is actually a small mountain town and if you're interested, a wolf sanctuary that will give a private tour with an appointment. Ask at the KOA for info as they are personal friends. She actually has several packs and one pack that you can go inside and "meet" the wolves.

Hi
The drive up to Silver City is beautiful. We stopped at Fort B, which is also a national cemetery, and the home of the Buffalo Soldiers. Sorry, I can't remember the exact name of the Fort. It was so peaceful there and we had the place to our selves. Also, in Silver City is an excellent restaurant called Diane's. Well prepared food and reasonably priced.
I am in Apache Junction near Phoenix right now and will be going to Quartzsite in Jan. Let us know when you get to AZ.

Sorry you had to wait so long for service...who do you have? Think I would be changing my provider! Not sure how long your rig is, but if you're fairly short the cliff dwellings north of Silver City are fantastic and one of the very few you can actually walk thru. If they're still giving tours, the open pit silver mine is a great tour, they take you in a van all the way to the bottom and also give a tour of the smelting plant. I could easily spend a couple of weeks there exploring.

The cliff dwellings are awesome. I'll second that.

How in the world could I have forgotten to mention the cliff dwellings. They really take you back in time as you walk through them.

You don't want us to answer that, do you?
