Checking In

Postby HorizonSeeker » Tue Dec 11, 2012 8:14 pm

I realize it has been a long time since I have posted. It has been a busy 2-3 months. First for the good news: I SOLD MY HOUSE!!! Yes, after 2 months of negotiating and dealing with the banks we finally got it all done Thanksgiving week. I had to take a little less than I waned to take but it was great to get it done. I didn't even mind too much that I lost a day of pay at Amazon to be in Nashville and get it done.

Speaking of Amazon, I have left there and I don't think I will be able to go back. Seems that one evening a bomb threat was called in and the upper level thought the best way to empty the building was to pull a fire alarm. That was at 7:10. At 7:30 I walked down from the 4th level of one of the back mods to find no one in the building and to see the lights flashing above the fire exits. It was so eerie to see all the machines running, carts left in aisles, tow motors sitting with full loads in the middle of the rows, but no people any where. I headed straight for the nearest fire door where I met up with a fireman who told me I shouldn't be in the building. No kidding?? Outside I found my group and they seemed surprised to see me. Bottom line: the audible alarm didn't work so if you were not somewhere that you could see the lights flashing or the mass exit of people who did see it, you were left in the building for another 20 minutes until it was official break time and you headed toward the breakroom. To add insult to it, the supervisor for the pickers took the time to send all pickers (a couple of whom were near where I was working) an emergency message on their scanners. ONLY that supervisor had the forthought for that. I decided it was not a good place to work and turned in my resignation effective immediately.

So after a couple of weeks resting and visiting at my cousin's horsefarm in KY I am on the road and headed somewhere south and somewhere warm. I will try to do better keeping up with you ladiees.

wow, pretty scarry but its good to see you post again. I'd like to say its warm in AZ but actually I turned on my heater
and trying to get warmed up. Guess I really shouldn't complain when its 60 in the daytime and I'm comfortable standing
in the sunshine when parts of the country are have a snowstorm. I do not miss the snow one bit but its sure beautiful
in pictures.

Nice to see your post. That experience at Amazon is scary. Similar thing happened to my son at a college dorm. Have a fun and relaxing time at the horse farm. :P

I have several friends still there. I remember the drill when I worked there - everything worked for it. Scary that everything didn't this time. I also remember all the pickers always got that type of info on scanners, but the rest of the departments didn't ... always wondered why. Would have thought they could program all scanners to let you know.

Congrats on the house ... and have fun in your travels.

Yes, Beth, I would think as big as they are (or so they say) on technology and safety that there would be a way to send messages like that on the scanners. Turns out there were 8 others like me - all from my department. Seems to me that some supervisors need to be trained to send their people the message (maybe the pickers' supervisor should train them). When I asked her why she said there was no time. Huh? How long would it take to type in FIRE and hit send? We got messages all the time telling us to call in or move to another area. Don't see why this warning couldn't happen. As to the failing of the alarm, well, we were told just that one they pulled was broken. Really? So you're telling me your system is different from the ones in schools where they are all connected? I have a lot of friends who work there because it's the only job in town other than fast food and it's good money. I hope for their sakes that the system gets fixed. HR asked me what it would take to get me to stay and I said "Proof that your sprinklers work better than your alarms." He thought I was joking. I just left and shook my head.

But hey, my house is sold and unlike a lot of people I don't have to stay and work, so I count myself blessed.

WHEW! So happy to hear from you again, and congrats on the sale of your house! What a scary experience at Amazon, and I am proud of you for standing up to the supervisor about the "failure to communicate!" I can't remember if you will be at the FL GTG or not, but I hope so. If that is the case, I will see you before too long now!

Thinking someone dropped the ball. I would think it would be set up where someone pushes a button and every electronic device gets the mssg. Kinda like the Amber Alert on TV etc. Sorry for the scare, but happy to see you back posting!
