Ellen, funny you should say that. Cause my Medusa did all the time from being around the critters..I do expect SHUGA to do a lot of woofing. And also saying, " Zeke, go to your room". Cause he gets to close to her cage and I say that to him all the time. And he goes in grumbling hahaha

She is pretty neat and boy does some strange turns. But cuddles big time. Trying to keep her to a routine so she doesn't get to demanding which they can be..

I'm enjoying her...and she watches me cook and yells. "Hello". From her cage...I make sure she doesn't watch me eating as they can start yelling and most people ( I might be one of them) get up and give them food. I was told don't. I mean they can be given some thing but doing that when you are eating is creating a big problem.

Sometime you get a chance and have an ipad give me a call and you can get to meet her. She's a trip. LoL

God bless and safe travels

hahaha, it could happen, my little Peewee one time did that. Someone was at the door knocking and the 4 dogs ran to door barking and right behind
them (on the floor :o ) was Peewee, wings spread out and BARKING. I was shocked and quickly picked him up before he got trampled.

Ava, Ms Shug (I've cut her name short haha) is now trying to laugh like me..as she does her cute little antics you hear her trying to chuckle..
cracks me up and today she took my pen and starting running with it...even fluffed her ruffles up..looked wild..and I called her and heard her trying to laugh..

She is a comic but oh so affectionate..and can make a mess in a heart beat..she's learning veggies and I call her my compost..cause she has her tray beneath
going "Green"...LOL

As she is getting more and more comfortable things she is doing are interesting..she only yells a few times..and I change times I let her out so she don't form a
pattern...and this way expect it and carry on...but the neatest thing is in the morning when I roll up her sheet she is at the door and says, "Hello"...it's really
neat...

She is making my days along with my Critters ..it's busy here and I don't have that lag of missing my family I'm too exhausted...which helps me a lot..

Oh she will cuddle in your arms if you let her .. she and I were on the couch and she was sleeping in my arms..this could get addictive :)

Soon I'll take more pictures of her...

God Bless

Zeeeeeeeeee, she's beautiful!
Congrats!

How long do cockatoos live?

I had a cockatiel that just died a couple of weeks ago at age 23! YIKES!

If I remember correctly - some cockatoos can live up to 80 years. Lowest average was around 30, I think. I remember when we had one for adoption at the humane society, we would only adopt it out to someone who would figure out before adopting about where it would go if/when something happened to them. They become very attached, and it's important, if possible, with any bird, that they know and like who will take them if that happens. Especially as they get older. They bond and the longer with someone, the harder it is for them.

Just looked at the info from the San Diego Zoo - and it says this:
Life span: 40 to 60 years or more, depending on species. Some cockatoos in zoos have been estimated to be over 100 years old!

Beth, if something happens to Barb and Robert, Shuga may come to me. Barb and I have been talking about it.  We will see how Shuga takes to me when I get to Florida. If that ever happens, it would then be up to me to figure out who would get her if something happened to me. We have been talking about the life span of Shuga and what to do if. It would be a life long commitment for sure.

Mitch, thanks SHUGA is really neat and she's and umbrella cockatoo. Life for this species is up to 70 yrs..she's already saying a few words. And now imitating my laughing..I was a little hesitant to get her because she was so young. But she picked ME...so the story goes..

She really is good about beinginhercage and playingatherplay station..and I give her out with with me alone at different times as they can be extremely demanding..so it's like you have to teach them to be independent of you.. She has lots of toys to amuse her and as I'm typing she keeps hitting the ipad and I come up with strange words.

I made her a meal this morning of couscous. Mixed veggies cranberries and grapes. She did pretty good at least half of it she ate. I already told her she's becoming my feathered compost...lots of debris.

A lot of work but really a joy for me...she loves talking on the ipad gets up and close to hear and tries to find you..

This is gonna be a really awesome experience for me and lots of exercise. Bending and picking up.

Praying for you that Abby will pull through this with flying colors

God bless
