TO BIG?

I have been wondering if my rig is to big for me.
It's just me & maggie...wonder if when I want to
stop at a small quait town or some tourist place
where would I park and how do I get thru the
town?? What do you all do?

I have been full-timing in a 32' Class C for the past 5 months. It has been limiting in that it is harder to pull into small places, but usually what I do when I want to go somewhere and I am concerned about finding a parking spot is to call ahead. I also will look at the place for parking ahead of time by going on Google Maps and looking at the satellite view.

For example, I was told by a couple of people that the town of Jerome near Cottonwood, AZ, because it was halfway up a mountain and an old mining town with no place to park. I stopped at the state park and they told me if I drove through town I would find a large overflow lot at the end. It meant a walk back to town, but it was manageable. It was a tight drive through town, but I was careful and made it.

Sometimes in a small town, I find if I go down a side street and down a couple of blocks, I can find a spot to park. I just did that in a small town in Michigan where I had a dentist appointment.

Travel around awhile before you doubt yourself too much. I am also waiting for Nan to find this post. She upgraded from a short Lexington to a 32 foot Class C. As we wandered around Alaska I watched her back that puppy into all kinds of parking spots and drove through any town we saw. If she wanted to go shopping she picked up and went...the length of her vehicle did not stop her. Will there be some limitations? I am sure. Would you miss the extra storage and floor plan if you down sized? At the moment you don't know yet but it will come to you either way. I don't full time so I don't know if I would need something bigger if I did. I do know that last year I got a vehicle I could tow. I didn't take it to Alaska because it wasn't practical but I will haul it down to FL this winter since I plan on staying in one spot for longer periods of time..... With every choice we make there are trade offs. You will discover what works for you but don't beat yourself up for now. Just get out there are practice exploring with what you have. The more experience you have the better your next decisions will be Whatever you decide.

I use to go to the French Quarter in New Orleans when I had a 28' motorhome and you can't get much more congested than that. I down sized to a 23' in 2006 and I sure miss the room I had. I think in most towns you can park on a side street. You might have to walk a little ways. I have parked in parking lots and paid more. Places that are real tourist destinations sometimes have shuttles to take you to the main attractions. In San Antonio we stayed at a campground that was on a bus line and we rode the bus. I would do some traveling before I decided my rig was too big. I'm not really in the market but if I ever trade again it will be for something larger.

I know I am still new at this, but everyday I like my rig more and more. I don't think at this point I would want one smaller. At almost 38', I know I cannot take it a lot of places. I love having the space and even if Mom did not travel with me, I think I would want a rig about this big. We definitely have to have a toad though for any side trips. There may be a point in the years to come that I want to downsize, but I think that will be a ways down the road. I think if I were to downsize, I would still have to have something at least as big as JudyB's.

I agree with the others. Give it a try first.

When I first got my rig, I was terrified about getting stuck in some small town. Now I do not worry at all and have managed to drive in some narrow places without problems. You will have some limitations, but with some experience, you will likely be making those tight turns and finding parking spots even in small towns.

Now, I DO carefully look into parking lots before going in one, even if it means driving around the block first. Large grocery stores and big shopping centers are easy, but I have parked on the street even in small towns, though often it meant walking a couple of more blocks.

Maggie - maybe you just need to get used to your MH?? Once you are comfortable with it, you will love the space. Besides, you don't want to take a hit already! The hits on motor homes are outrageous. I've got a very nice 35' diesel pusher (2 slides) and some times with I had something smaller but for now this is what I have. Good luck with your decision.

We're all going to be totally different - and that includes what size we want/like. I doubt I'll ever want to go over 25 feet as long as I'm traveling. BUT, since I started pulling a toad, that doesn't really matter any more. Towing limits me more than my length of the rv alone does. Can you tell I'm not a fan of towing while traveling? That said, it has advantages other times. For me, I'm still not sure which is the better answer. But for most, they like having the car. Again, we are all different.

Spend some time traveling and getting used to what you have. Find out how you like to travel. Maybe you'll discover it's perfect for you - or too big, or even too small. But it really does take some time.
