Red, Buddy was my big black Lab who was at home. Sophie was with me at the GTG and fortunagely, she's a young two or three.

Karen,
I am sorry for your pain, it's too bad we aren't able to take some of it from you. There really isn't much one can say to help other than how wonderful it is for our pets that they do have us to help even when it comes time for the "Rainbow Bridge" decision. I hope each day gets better for you.

Just read this and I am so sorry for your loss of Buddy... You can believe that he and Sassy are doing lots of catch up and looking after you and Sophie.

We hurt when they have to leave us but there is nothing in the world that can compare to to the exchanging of love and souls between us and a pet. The joy and love of a pet, the knowing that it doesn't last forever and the pain of losing is a cycle we repeat over and over.

As I said in another post elsewhere, I'm trying really, really hard to stay away from all shelters right now. In the past I've usually gone looking for another older dog who needs a forever home pretty quickly. I don't think there's a better tribute to one pet than to find another that needs you and a home. But, I'm older and I'd be much smarter to stick with just one, however, I notice that Sophie seems kinda lonely and keeps looking for Buddy.

Watchit! That's how we ended up with the dumbest dog on earth - Jasmine! Although I have to say it's all an act because she sure played us!!!! Sweetest, well-behaved in the shelter, offered to shake with anyone that came close to her, sat really quietly and prettily, totally ignored Oscar. All that lasted until we drove in the driveway

So well stated, Echo, and so true. I am crying for you as I read this post, Karen, but I wouldn't not have a furry soul with me for anything in the world, no matter how hard it is when they have to leave us. And, as you have said, it never gets any easier.
That cycle that Echo mentions has been a part of my life forever, and shall remain for as long as I am able to care for my 4-footers. The love and the sharing of good times is a huge part of my life.

Hugs to you from me, and consoling licks from Molly and Dinah

I picked up Buddy's urn today and he now resides right along side Sassy on my shelf. People seeing my pottery on the shelf think they are just another Indian pot I picked up somewhere. My instructions to my daughter are that she is to mix us all together when my time comes and hopefully, scatter us in New Mexico NOT TEXAS. Told her that if she couldn't do that to contact one of my RVing friends so they can do it for me.

Still staying away from the shelter - so far, so good but am now only warm on one side while in bed.

Karen.....I didn't want to put this thought in your mind but years ago when I got my first English Cockers I began the rationalization that two 25-30 pound dogs could join the pack for one larger 60 pound dog.....and I knew that there had been room for two large dogs in my life....so maybe.... :o  ...and that was before I had met a toy breed that I liked.....do you know that you can wash them just fine in a sink without hurting your back? We make room for the important in life.....

Oh, Karen, how I know how you feel. I'm so sorry you have lost your Buddy. It is such a challenge and a privilege to know, care for and love our dogs through all stages of life. I know your heart is hurting and you are in my thoughts.
