Dog Food recommendations

Well, Char (excel) now that we've gotten Abby straightened out, have we completely confused you as to what to get your little darling???

Good news Mitch. Glad Abby is doing better. I add a bit of wet food to her bowl, then a bit of water and mix that up, then add the kibble. I don't like to just feed the dry kibble cause my vet said they need some moisture in their food as it aids in digestion. (I thought drinking water would do it and probably does). This is also what the breeder told me they fed her so I didn't want to change that. She has NO interest in just the dry food unless it belongs to Harley. (Laura's dog) It has just taken a while to find the right food but think I am on the right track now. In fact just bought another bag of the Salmon as that seems to really make a difference with the allergies. Now I don't know IF it was the chicken, or the grain free, but I am totally happy and so is the dog without all the itching. So I will stay on my program. I bought a bag of the lamb also just so I can change it up a bit. I tried a small sample bag of that and she seemed to like it just fine.

When we got the puppies home I went to the local guru for pet diets and asked what to feed them. They have 7 doxies and since the boys were going to be standards I really had to consider weight issues when feeding. Their recommendation was Evo which is totally grain free. Duncan is still on it and thriving, keeping his weight in check as he is a true standard dachshund. Back issues are one thing I don't even want to think about. He is on dry with some 95% chicken and turkey wet mixed with it. Stools are firm and minimal is size, but then he is not a large dog. Cost for him is about 30.00 a month.

Molly and Dinah say "YAY ABBY!"

They eat nothing but Purina dry Little Bites brand, although, now that I have access to Tractor Supply stores down here in FL, I will get Molly more Wild Food something brand that has salmon and no grains, I think. Molly's stomach has been 'delicate' since I picked her up on the streets of Detroit. The vet thinks she was poisoned at one time. Purina Little Bites is one food that agrees with her and seems to keep her healthy. Same with Dinah.

I used to add a bit of water to Tips' food to get him to eat. He was so fussy. But Peaches doesn't eat unless she wants to - talked to the vet about it and as she's healthy as can be was told not to worry about it now. Amazes me how often she'll eat late at night or occasionally just nibble one day, then eat all her food late the next. And she does that if I add water, too. So quit doing it - as I was throwing too much food away. Now, if I put some canned in it - she picks that out and eats it IF it's the flavor she wants. I do give her some canned as a treat occasionally.

Yep, what we'll do for our little ones, eh? And some not so little ones.

When you read the labels remember that the first ingredients listed are the MAIN ingredients in the food percentage-wise.

We had been feeding our two Beneful for years. It was one of the ones Oscar would eat regularly. They are also ones that may eat everything in sight for several days, then not eat anything for a day or two. And they get fed twice a day.

But after reading stuff about Beneful on some of the websites and some of the symptoms Oscar has been exhibiting, especially some weakness in his hind legs and the licking and scratching, we have recently switched and are trying some other brands. Now his weakness may just be because he's the old man, 10+, but in case it's something else, I would like to keep him around for a while.

Because Schnauzers are prone to skin problems, I have changed over to AvoDerm back at the beginning of summer. I have definitely seen an improvement in Rascal who was the one beginning to have skin issues. Reading the ingredients, I am now a big believer in this food. It is better for Luke too with his thyroid issues. I feed the one where you can interchange between 3 different kinds so they get different tastes. There is salmon, duck and lamb, I think. I definitely know salmon and duck. Lots of Omega 3's. It is more expensive, but seeing the changes in Rascal, especially, it is worth it to me. When I am not where I can get it, I read all the labels to make sure what I can get is not meal or a meat by product based. Also have to watch fat content.

Just found at Walmart: Premium dog food by Ol Roy. Chicken and brown rice, no wheat, no corn, no soy. Peas, carrots, cranberries. Looks good if label is accurate.

I have bought that food at Walmart when no Petsmart or Petco anywhere close. I read the label too and it seemed to be OK. With Luke, I have to be really careful of dog foods now too.
