Our Buddy is very sick

Postby MsBHaven » Sun Nov 11, 2012 7:15 pm

Our 3 1/2 lb. Chihuahua Buddy is not feeling well and we have no idea what is wrong with him. We will be taking him to the vet early tomorrow. It started with lots of white foam being spit up (sorry for the details). We believe he is 18 years old, but he had been very active and his hearing was better than ours. He is drinking water, not eating, urination is fine, he can climb up steps. He is not acting like he is in any pain but he has no energy. We are feeding him chicken broth with a syringe. He just stays on the couch and won't go anywhere unless we take him to the water bowl or set him on the grass.

Any idea what may be going on?

So sorry little Buddy isn't feeling well. I'm assuming Annie isn't showing any similar symptoms. Could he possibly gotten hold of a frog? I know when Remi (when he was still alive) & Weatherby will sometimes catch a frog & get foam in their mouths like that, some kind of protection that the frogs have & with Buddy being so little it may be making him sick. Just an idea.

Vicki is right, I have had both my dogs get hold of frogs, they don't feel very good for several days after it happens. Not sure what that frog puts out, but it will sure make them sick.

Be careful if you're using canned chicken broth - it can be really high in sodium and cause dehydration. My prayers are with you and Buddy. Scranbled eggs are gentle on the stomach if he'll eat them. Maybe an emergency trip to the vet since he's so little.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea that a frog could be the problem. We do have tiny tree frogs in our yard so that is definitely a possibility. I also didn't know about the chicken broth being high sodium - he has been drinking a lot of water. I'll try scrambled eggs. He seems a little better, maybe. Because of his age and size, we will probably take him to the vet soon also.

Thought I posted to this - guess I really am losing my mind. So sorry to hear about your Buddy and hope that he is doing better. So scary to have our babies get sick - and we can feel so very helpless and hopeless. Best wishes and hopes that Buddy pulls through. I, too, never heard of or would have thought of the frog possibility. Hopefully it was that and he's on the mend now.

Buddy is still hooked up to an IV and had to spend the night at the vet office. His blood work looked a little better at 4 pm but he was still sick. We wanted to bring him home on the IV, but we agreed that his best chance to get better would be to stay with them overnight. He used to weigh 3.2 lbs and now weighs 2.78 lbs. We hope he pulls through this infection so he can be on antibiotics and then get 4 teeth pulled.

Thanks, Carolyn, for giving an earlier update.
