Did any of you know that the original apple pies McDonald's served were fried pies? Now, in the US, they have baked pies - and no longer call them fried pies - going for the healthier version. Most of the rest of the world get the original fried pies.

Vickie - your family was ahead of the times - trying to get healthier with the pies :)

Around these here parts that fried pie was fried. You had apple or peach filling, made a small round pie dough crust and on went the filling, folded it in half, mashed the edges with a fork and drop them in to hot grease until they were brown. A bit of heaven with a cold glass of milk.

I know in SC that is how they make them cause my MIL mad them.

The fresher the ingredients the better the pie.

Now that I have said all that I would love a fried pie..

My mom was a wonderful cook (which must skip generations). She made the most yummy fried pies. For me she made sugar or chocolate fried pies but the rest of the family preferred peach. I probably would love Strawberry. I didn't continue the tradition as I have never liked to fry things. My family knew if they wanted fried chicken it would have to be KFC's. I only microwave and grill now..haven't had the inclination to use the burners or oven in the RV.

I have to admit as tired as I am tonight most anything amuses me, but you gotta know that sitting up here in NH with winter breathing down our necks I am laughing so hard over this thread. What we find humor in is amazing.

I have to agree fried is fried.

My Grandmother made the best fried fruit pies(North Texas). Why don't we learn how to do these things when we have a chance. I tried to make some one time and they were a mess. I'm a big fan of Natchitoches meat pies, went to Northwestern. Yea, I can still spell it. Now we can buy them frozen. Don't like their crawfish pies. There was a lady in Abbeville that made the best crawfish pies. When she died her daughter made them for a while but closed the business. Someone told me recently that one of the granddaughters is making them again. Need to tell my DH. He will track them down.

Around here they make sweet dough pies which are baked but look like the fried pies. My neighbor makes the best Fig Sweet Dough Pies. The ones sold in stores are more dough than fruit.

I'm with Tina, if there is a cook off let us know where to show up.

Roger's grandmother made the best fried pies (FRIED). Tennessee fried pies are really good.
