Terrific Tuesday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Terrific Tuesday

Postby Redwahine » Tue Oct 16, 2012 6:58 am

The wackiest things can happen that can turn your world upside down in the blink of an eye. I can't thank everyone enough for all your messages and thoughts about the loss of my cousin. All of you are so thoughtful and comforting. Again, thank you. Now for the rest of the story. I spent most of the day really upset and talking to relatives about a memorial service and making travel plans. Then we get a call with the rest of the story.

Cousin had foot surgery a month ago and had been sedentary. He got up and fell on a TV tray injuring himself. When daughter found him he had such sever chest pain he could not breath and had crushing chest pain. Took him to local ER. He could not talk from crushing chest pain. The ER docs interpret the CT that he has another aortic dissection and would die shortly without treatment. Cousin had a living will and medical power of attorney stating that cousin did not want extraordinary measures and DNR. Daughter had to go to the admin office to register said documents so they would not proceed with heroic measures.

When she retuned to ER the bed her dad was in was gone. The bed in the next alcove had a sheet over the body with attendants cleaning, etc. she did not say anything to anyone, she just assumed it was her father. Devastated, daughter went to a waiting room and started to call relatives...

Meanwhile, while she was gone from the ER a very hyper ER Dr had put cousin in a medically induced coma and loaded him into an ambulance and sent him to Stanford, where the Drs that took care of the dissection 10 years ago eagerly awaited to fix him again.

Nurses finally found daughter and wanted consent for Stanford to treat him. Can you imagine the rush of feelings?? What? He's still alive? Daughter jumped in car and rushed down to Stanford while explaining on the phone her father's wishes about no further treatment. When she got there, dad was still in medical coma and intubated. She thought the worse. The Dr explained that he was OK. He did NOT have another aortic dissection. The other DRs at the ER thought the scars from the old repaired dissection was actually a new, worse dissection. Actually, his heart was fine, looked surprising well compared to the post surgical CTs taken 10 yrs ago. But he still couldn't breath without extreme pain. :|

Prognosis? The damage from the fall caused so much pain that he could hardly breath reducing his oxygen levels bringing on a myriad of symptoms that would lead a Dr to make that diagnosis based on cousin's med history and the CT. The ribs were not broken so the Drs did not catch the chest injury. But apparently, he severely injured the muscles and ligaments of his chest area that caused extreme constriction and pain of the muscles and ligaments around the heart and lungs. They will keep him heavily sedated so he can breathe. So, cousin will be OK, Praise The Lord. It does make you wonder about the medical system. I can't believe the chain of events that allowed all of us to believe that he died. But, again, thank God the med system messed up and he is very much alive and will live to tell the story of his almost passing.

Again, thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.

Good heavens, talk about an emotional roller coaster! Just so glad he's gonna be ok. Sometimes the big guy upstairs works in mysterious ways.

Now THAT'S the kind of morning coffee message I love to read! Perhaps when he gets better enough to be de-comatized and read all of our well-wishes, etc., you should show them to him! They should speed up his recovery to read his sort-of obituary!

Day has dawned much cooler here this morning at 41 degrees and more grey, dank skies.

Kids and I went to dinner last night at some place that had a buffet (can't remember the name of the place although it's famous) and pigged out! Orion ate his weight in sampling, I believe! Then we went shopping at Price Chopper. Have no idea what is in store for today, but I need to get going and feed the dogs so I can go into the house and free up Joe to get some chores done around here. Barbzee is probably on the road south now----happy trails, Barb!!

Have a wonderful day everybody, and stop by and tell us a bit about what's going on in your life. Coffee is hot.
Life is about learning to dance in the rain
Happy travels!

Comedy of errors and also points out the need for consistent medical care. The doctors in the ER, not knowing the whole history of his previous dissection (not having the scans), interpret based on what they see. This daughter for assuming the worst. And the trauma of the fall.

I'm glad he's going to be ok, Red.

I got the Land Dinghy out of jail yesterday - seems like it anyway when you have to take it to the shop. Got the axle flipped so she doesn't drag just getting in and out of the driveway. Plus I had 2 Maxxair vent covers put on it so that I can open my vents when it's raining. That will help when we have hot doggy breath in the trailer.

Oh Red, what wonderful news. I am all for some system where doctors can all access your previous medical history. His poor daughter!

Planning on getting all the extra blankets and pillows I have under the bed out of there and thrown away. I brought at least one more bed covering with me too. In my house, I would change out the look of the bed with the seasons. I did give oldest all my Christmas bedding at least. I think I will put my bread maker, George Foreman and Food Saver in that area instead. Then I can access these items without having to go outside and empty a storage bay. They should weigh less than all the blankets and pillows I have brought since there is not a square inch of available space under the bed with all the bedding I brought. I brought them thinking of grandkids going with me on some future date. If they do, I can just tell DD they need to bring their pillow and bedding with them for the air mattresses. Since I have 2 complete sets of towels with me, I think I will dispose of one set. I have 2 different colors for different seasons. I am starting to get rid of my Sticks and Bricks mindset I hope. Also going to put laundry supplies in one plastic bin and all cleaning supplies in another. That should store much easier than them being just stacked loose in the storage bin.

Just saw Barb Zeee hit the road heading south.

Everyone have a great day and if you are traveling, stay safe.

Wow Red! That guy is like a cat with 9 lives! Glad he is gonna be OK!

Dawn, you should get some of those space bags for your blankets. They really work great! Saves a lot of space and you just need a vacume cleaner with a hose to suck the air out. They can be used over and over.

Back to work today. Got nothing accomplished yesterday on my day off. I have tomorrow off so hopefully I will get something done then.

Hope you all have a productive and/or fun day!

Red, that's better than Paul Harvey....rest of the story. Praise the Lord!

Well, I towed my Honda Fit from the RV place back to McIntosh. It was really pretty easy, so far so good. Then I finished evicting the fire ant population from my cg site and am now all set up. I'm sitting outside, in my rocking chair watching one of the red-shouldered hawks looking for dinner just a few feet in front of me. God is good.

Dawn, I did exactly what you did. I put in extra blankets, sheets, pillows, etc for my kids and grandkids. Then we went camping and they brought sleeping bags and their own pillows!!

I tossed almost all of it out. Now i have one extra pillow in case a friend vsits, and two extra thin blankets to layer, plus one big down comforter for me, which I have never used!!

when I get to my son's house in Ohio in a month, I need to go through stuff underneath in storage that I brought and rethink it. Amazing what you don't need--like my iron.

Judy, I had to laugh when you said you packed on iron! Don't even have one of those in my house, of course I have to dryer to 'fluff" with!

In the winter I bring one of the electric throws. It doesn't take up as much room as a twin electric blanket and it is big enough for one person.
