Xylitor and Dogs

I was just watching the pop news show - America Now. They had a story on how dangerous (even deadly) XYLITOL is to dogs. I guess that ingredient is found in almost every type of sugarless gum. The guy on the show lost his beautiful great dane to the poison.

Wow, this is really scary especially if you have dogs that are not finicky about what they eat. Thanks for posting.

There was a post over on rv.net that xylitol was in one of the drugs given to an owner's dog, causing the dog to seize. It was scary reading that.

Thanks Mitch. I just put my gum up in the cabinet where I know the Chewmonster can't get it. She pretty much eats anything and everthing so will be watching for used gum on the ground when I walk her now. Pretty scary stuff!!

Thank you for posting. I didn't know what xylitol was. Looked it up to find it is an artificial sweetener. Although Tyler is a very picky eater - wont even take a treat without smelling it and nudging it with his nose first I have had dogs that will eat anything without looking to see what it is. I will be careful to dispose gum to make sure any pet will not be able to get to it.

I just read about a ferret that died too, from eating sugarless gum with that in it.

That is certainly some nasty stuff. My niece had a Beagle pup that picked up someone's gum. We were at a truck stop, taking the pup for her 1st ride with the rest of the group. When walking her back to the truck,I noticed she was chewing something. I did take it out of her mouth and tossed it aside and thought no more about it. Sadly, she didn't last more than 3 days after chewing the gum. I never put the two together until now. Now I feel guilty about just tossing the gum aside.

I knew about that - since I don't chew gum, mainly worry about it with Peaches cuz she finds and eats most everything. Hopefully not that! Good reminder.

I do like sugarless gum but only occasionally, to freshen my breath...I had read recently about not tossing gum for birds think it is bread and it can be deadly to them, now to find out about how potentially dangerous it is for dogs has me thinking just pop a breath mint instead...

Since I have dentures top and bottom, I don't chew gum, but will sure watch out to make sure the dogs don't get a hold of any now. While they were only in their own yard, never had to worry about things like that.
