I have the Kindle and Nook apps on my phone - have the Nook app and another general app on my computer - oh, have a general app on the phone, also. But you never know when all of our high-tech ways fail - the real book will be here. Maybe only one to get me through, but one or two probably.

My Kindle had died earlier in the spring before I even left on the trip and my iPad quit working sometime in the beginning of July. Thankfully I was traveling through Alaska with fellow readers. I survived with cast offs from Nan and Birdie and Liz.....then when we started finding the "exchange" libraries at some of the campgrounds...I was able to pick up a few more in exchange for some that I had already read. Real books....don't leave home without some....

Less than 3 weeks to go for the gtg! I'm so excited! My Mom has been helping me with some recipes for potlucks. Since I don't have a lot of room, its been interesting with what she has come up with that is simple and doesn't require a lot of ingredients (read: small fridge) :D

Can't wait to see everyone!

I too am anxiously awaiting my first GTG with all of you. Can't wait. Does anyone have any basic info a newbie would need to know for attending one of these? I don't want to get there and not have the essentials or be unprepared for whatever activities, etc.

Sandi,

Here are my experiences. Others may chime in with theirs as well.

I have been to a few and they really aren't that structured. For myself, I always have bread, peanut butter, jelly and butter. I also bring chips, some crackers, maybe some english muffins (altho I'm not much of a breakfast eater). I have the standard condiments in my fridge. I bring bottled water and canned soft drinks. I usually carry a bottle of Bailey's but sometimes forget it LOL I have a tv and will be getting a small dvd player if I'm camping without cable and its raining, which it does frequently here in Oregon.

I like to just sit outside in my chair and enjoy camping. I like state parks all the way up to and including resort rv parks. I don't like to dry camp because I have very small holding tanks. I work in state government, in a building with over 1,000 people, and its nice to get away from that from time to time and recharge my batteries. So, I guess you could say my trailer is my escape pod from reality LOL

For the potlucks, we can always just talk about what everyone brought and what everyone needs to go get at the grocery store (that would be ME) and we can make a run.

For some of the gtg's I've been at we've bbq'd burgers and hot dogs, salmon, steaks, etc or we've just gone to the store and bought ready to eat food. Just depends on what everyone wants to do. Spaghetti is easy and doesn't take a lot of room in your rv. Sometimes we just go out to dinner LOL

Just bring the things with you that you want to do and the food you like to eat. Books, magazines, whatever. There are several hiking trails at the park by the river and the state parks usually have some kind of activity on the weekends. If you want to watch movies in your mh well that's okay too. There are lots of things to do in the area and some may want to take a day trip to Crater Lake which is only about an hour away or somewhere else. There will be a few people there that have vehicles for day trips or a run to the grocery store.

Mostly, a gtg is a way to meet people from this forum in person. Some of us met at gtg's before and have become life-long friends. If we're lucky enough to live close, we can meet more often for even non-camping events. And we can have mini-gtg's with people that are traveling through the area. I've met Carold twice on her travels through the area and we've had lunch. We always have a great time. I met Liz when I found out she was camping about 10 miles from my house a few years ago. I ran over in the next morning and had coffee with her before she hit the road.

I guess the gtg is whatever you want it to be. You can be as social as you want. We aren't going to be joined at the hip for the duration unless we want to. I know I get up pretty early and go to bed early. Others sleep in and stay up late. There are no expectations and we don't have a set agenda. I probably wouldn't go if that was the case.

Just come on up for a few days of camping and let's have some fun!

What Laura said.... What some of us love about the GTGs is that they are what ever we decide to make them....once we get there! The best preparation is a comfortable camp chair and a container for coffee, tea, wine :) .......and your own share of stories and laughter..... If you forget something, someone else will have it in their rig for you to borrow.....

(now the Florida gtg started those campfire "fashion shows" last winter...so I can't answer to that trend, yet, since I wasn't there.... :o But I imagine the west coasters can come up with their own ideas! )

Ellen,

Introducing Bailey. Bailey is a 9 pound cockapoo who when you meet him, you will find it hard to believe that he is 8.

Can't wait to meet you all and Ellen, I am so excited about seeing your new rig. I am currently in the process of developing a 5 year plan to go full time so I am interested in exploring all of the RV options.

Joan - Bailey is wonderful! I remember the photos of your rig's birthing process. Yours, and Laura's and Sandi's and mine - that's a lot of new "homes" in one place! 14 more days. :D

And what kind of dog is Tucker? It looks like there will be a lot of dogs of all different kinds and shapes. My rig is not so new. I have had it for over a year already.
