You know, what is so special about our forum here?? It's the fact we can talk about almost anything without fear of repercussions such as getting "kicked off" .....as long as we are "respectful" of each other....I do believe that discussions on politics and religion have their place, but do we need it here? I, for one, appreciate the fact I can come here and not see political ads, etc.....Let's keep it that way....

Just my 2 cents....

I too remember when those words were added to the Pledge of Allegiance..in fact I was just
learning to speak English and was so proud of myself that I could recite this ...then along came the added words
that was 1954 via President Eisenhower... I went home and taught my parents as they were studying to become
citizens.... How soon we forget...

I too don't get into the Political arena..however I guess I fall under the category of being a Capitalist as well as
my parents..as we have and still do ..our own business...(couldn't resits)

What matters most is that "if you want change you have to do something about it...if you want to sit back and have
things handed to you...well that's your choice in this fantastic Nation.."

For me and my family .."We are proud to be an American Citizen" and thankful that we were able to come to this country..and for those just asking or maybe thinking.. Yes, we were sponsored and yes, we all became citizens.

That's my two pennies worth...and still not getting into Who is right and Who is wrong...I'll do that in the voting box !

I too am glad the conventions are over with... now come on Football :)

God Bless...All Of You

I agree. I have always loved the happy warrior. My FB posts notwithstanding, I love to debate ideas and laugh with people of all persuasions. I do take this stuff seriously but don't toe the line with my political party. Once we can back away from "positions," I like to hear people's personal reasons for believing the way they do.

"Under God" was added when Ike was in office. I think it was about 1956.
Personally, I would like to get rid of the political parties. No republicans, no democrats, etc. then those running for office would have to rely on their views and what they are going to do and people would vote on that basis instead of just voting for the "party"

I remember reciting the pledge before that phrase was added. GOSH, am I that old :o

This forum is comprised of many people with different views of everything. Hopefully it will continue to be diverse. carold

"Under god" was not added to the pledge until I was out of elementary and middle school. We never said it until sometime in the 60s, or even later, I believe. Heaven knows you and I are NOT as old as we would have to be if it had been added in the late 1800s, Carol!!!! You must have meant late 1900s!

And,as you said, our motto is still "E Pluribus Unum" ----an excellent Latin motto making us the UNITED states.

Our forefathers didn't specify that we should always separate church (religious beliefs) and state for nothing. So many people now believe that the Christian version of a god is synonymous with the United States now. What about an Islamic god? What about a Hindu god? What about a Native American god? What about all gods that our citizens choose to believe in? Why have we become corrupted from our original plan of keeping all beliefs out of our government doings and sayings and mottos?

I agree---no political ads or political brainwashing......just friendly, diverse discussions about ideas and opinions we all have, with no judgementality of anyone else's thoughts.

And what's extra nice about this thread is that is has been labeled "Politics" so if one chooses to ignore it, GREAT!

I ignored it as long as I could, but then I got interested! Sigh!

The best thing - is that this thread is going strong and no one is blasting anyone else. That's how it should be.

I do talk politics some on FB. I'm all for discussing things, and disagreeing and I DO learn from it. I dislike all the emails and FB posts (and I'm sure all the other sites) that are full of lies and bs - on both sides. What's great about the internet is we can check the facts - and check the checkers lol - What I find sad is when people defend the posts that are fraudulent (going to even the sad posts about missing kids, etc - not political - but why the heck do people have to twist things and post complete untruths?)

OK, I'm off topic -normal for me and my mouth and/or fingers. But while I post some political things on FB, I normally keep out of it entirely on here. And while my beliefs are so different from some others - and I'm not liberal or conservative - have for years and years looked at the individuals - and agree with the post that I wish there weren't parties, and people were on their own ... but what I started to say - some of the folks on here that I hold dear to my heart are people with very differing opinions to me - and we don't love each other any less for them. Sometimes I think more. Those who don't like me for my political views - or my religious views (most of whom have no idea what mine really are) I feel sorry for - as I do believe diversity is our bedrock.

Thanks, Karen ... for posting this - and thanks to all for keeping it in a vein where it's easy for everyone to stay respectful. And for those of you who work for candidates -no matter which candidate ... whether I agree or not ... I'm so proud of you for doing so ... for believing in someone enough to want to do that. It's been a long time since I've felt that way about any one candidate ... would like to again.

My final say: Whether you like or hate Obama I was so proud of this country for actually electing a black man for President. Now its time for a woman, don't you think?

I do Karen. Would like to see a woman as President. I wanted Hilary last time. I think women are more willing to listen and work with each other most of the time. I think they usually have more empathy.

You bet it's time for a woman president, and I can't think of anyone more knowledgeable about government and world affairs than our Hillary! She could be a real corker of a prez, I believe!

I too was reluctant to read this thread as I have strong political beliefs (which I don't like discussing with anyone since it won't change how I feel or vote). Glad to read that it is all civil and generic!

I also hate the mud slinging. It angers and confuses everyone and nothing good is accomplished from it other than making fools of those involved.

My dad went to a local parade this weekend which he normally loves, but said it was awful this time because it was all about politics. Cars full of politicians handing out political crap.

My friend Steve has opposite political views from me and as much as I try to avoid the subject, he continues to cram his beliefs down my throat at every possible chance. I just try to change the subject quickly. I hate when people do that. Same with religion. I have my beliefs and keep them personal and respect others beliefs, but really resent people who try to change my way of thinking in a pushy judgemental way. I am open to a nonjudgemental, thoughtful discussion but most people have too strong of beliefs to do that.

One of my pet peeves is when people don't vote and then they b%tch and complain about how things are run in this country. If you don't vote, you have no right to complain. Especially for us women, the women before us fought long and hard to gain the right to vote in this country and it is a shame that so many women choose not to exersize that right and privilage! Get out there and vote!!! We CAN make a difference!

Anyways, I am also glad this forum keeps things like politics and religion to a generic, respectful level and we can keep things open and fun on here!
