Don't know about the rest of you but I, for one, am sick to death of all the nasty politics this year - on both sides. What ever happened to reasonable discussion between intelligent people. Seems like people are resorting to name calling, ON BOTH SIDES, rather than reasoned arguments. Its so much easier to call the other person names rather than actually listen to their ideas. Frankly, I think personal views on religion and politics should be kept private and personal. I don't expect everyone to agree with me and I certainly won't agree with everyone else. Is that a reason to call me a name?

I know I am sure tired of all the political posts on Facebook. I will be so glad when the election is over!! I don't think any of them are going to change anyone's mind. I'm sorry if someone was rude to you. I agree both religion and political views are subjects that probably are best kept personal. I have no idea what the politics of some of my best friends are.

Couldn't agree more Karen! My pet peeve is that everyone seems to have forgotten the tenant of 'separation of church and state'. Didn't we learn that in 8th grade?

Yeah there is some nastiness going on.

But if someone called you a name in a mean spirited way simply because you don't agree with them or a political point of theirs then that is their problem.

Frankly it they can't handle a friend or someone who doesn't agree with them it would make me a little nervous. I would probably think about dropping them.

I rarely discuss politics. I don't hide my views or who I might like but normally I just don't talk about politics because I usually don't care and I truly have not aligned myself with any "one" party.

To understand Blaise Pascal's quote, all you need to do is go back through history and re-examine some of the effects of early religious fervor (missionaries) on developing countries and the religious persecution that took place in Europe that brought many early emigrants to America. It is one of the reasons that freedom of religion (all religions...) was such a tenet for the founding fathers....

I agree that our social media, specially FB, has too many unsolicited political messages. On the other hand, social media has become a major way in which politicians get their "message" to the people. But, for me social media like FB and this forum is like talking to my friends over coffee at my kitchen table. I would not post anything I would not say in person.

The original motto of the United States was secular. "E Pluribus Unum" is Latin for "One from many" or "One from many parts." It refers to the welding of a single federal state from a group of individual political units -- originally colonies and now states.

The phrase "under God" was added to the otherwise secular Pledge of Allegiance in the late 1800s.

"So help me God" was added as a suffix to the oaths of office for federal justices and judges. However, they are not compelled to recite the words. There has been a widespread belief that every president since George Washington has said these words during his inauguration. The belief appears to be without merit.

Your right it is fascinating when you start researching into the history of some of the sayings that are used and thought of as having been there since the beginning.

I for one would "love" to know what mojo juice you are drinking if you remember saying the pledge before that phrase was added!!! I want some too!

And like you I love the diversity of the ladies in this group.

1900's, not 1800's - just a slip of the fingers, I think. I, too, remember when under God was added and I don't have any longevity elixir - Sigh - wish I did!
