there was a test some years back on another forum where you take a couple squares of the tp, put it in a class of water and stir. You check to see how
well it breaks up. If it breaks up good, its good to use, if it doesn't break up very well, it likely will cause problems in the tank. I use the 1000 sheet rolls.
Its breaks up just fine.

I also use Northern did the test past with flying colors but the flushable wipes like cottenelle? didn't pass the test sense I like them as well I use a garbage can for all paper that would normally go in the toilet..in away I'm boondocking sorta at my dd's am plugged in which is good as the genny isn't with me...but they have no way for me to dump except take it to the local RV campground and you all know that I don't drive towing the 5th wheel..so trying to come up with alternative ideas looked at a blue boy costs over 100 dollars to get one trying to use my toilet as little as possible ie no paper down or as little as possible and using the toilet inside as much as possible someone suggested that the company that services the portable johns might put me on there route need to call and see dh and I could go 3 weeks without dumping with it just being me and using other facilities think I can go lots longer.
one thing to realize Dawn is that some how that sensor no matter what you do is going to some time get covered up and will give you a misreading as it's full all the time....rarely even when pumped out by a honey wagon does it work..so get to know the symptoms of being full Just a thought

Sheila,

Those sensors never seem to work after a while. I mostly figure mine based on days and usage. Kind of have a running count in my head of how many times someone has used the toilet. The sensor in our last 5th wheel never worked (we bought it used), so I got in this habit. The sensor in Sunshine is still working. Hopefully will for a while. When we were at a CG with no sewer hookup, I always used the #1 TP in the waste basket, #2 TP in the toilet system. Of course emptied the waste basket every morning. I imagine I will get Mom using this system too. It seems the safest not to overload the black tank with paper, even broken down leaves shreds. I do use the Cottenelle wipes, but they go right into the waste basket.

I bit the bullet and bought a Thetford hauling buddy (not sure of the name, but you know what I mean). I got mine on Amazon. It was less than CW, but they were still really proud of it. Did get free shipping, so that helped. If we are staying at a state park for a couple weeks, I sure don't want to have to break camp to go dump if I can avoid it. Paul is going to carry it on the carrier he has for the back of his MH for his scooter. I told him he had better make sure it is strapped on really well, cause it was too expensive to lose going down the road.

I had always used the TP for rvs when I had the motor home but I have decided to use a waste basket and toss the bag daily. It will just be me using it primarily. I think I am going to get a 'hauling buddy' too. It will be some time before hooking up just to move or go to the dump station is an easy matter. I will be looking around for testosterone for hooking up (rv only :)), parking, etc for awhile. I just hope they don't have a network for warning the next park about this lady who requires their help and they find a hiding place...lol

If you have a shiny, new-looking RV, just stand around outside staring at whatever thing you need help with and someone will likely come to help. Took only 2-3 minutes the first time I camped. It helps to camp near a lot of people, especially on a nice day when they are all outside cooking.

When I had forgotten to close an outisde valve and water gushed from the side of the RV, I had three guys knocking at my door within a few minutes offering their help!

Pardon the pun Those sensors never work right in the black tank...I even bought the "Wand" to clean my tank and that helps for the short time..then as soon as a fragment of TP paper hits that sensor it's back to giving "False information"... :o so I do the usual..if it's just me.. I know I've got a good while before I have to dump...but if hubby and company come...good golly miss molly... hahaha...we dump every two weeks..cause they just don't get it !!! think they are in a Stick and Brick and Flush run water Flush..OMG...LOL

I have done the Ice cubes too.. as when I'm emptying tanks and setting up for parking long time.. I do a number and a half and then some..drive around the blocks with the clanging...gawd it can get loud...LOL then flush out those cubes..hahaha... but when I store my rig..like I am now... I put chemical in with a gallon of water in my gray tank and black tank..and I never have odor when I come back in her to use again...now that works for me..oh and in Florida.. I do add water to the bowl (toilet) and cover with saran wrap..so it doesn't evaporate.. how i know.. I go over an run the genny and engine once a month or some times 2 mos..depends if i forgot...LOL..

Ok, I'm off the box now...Borax box...dusted out the rig so make sure no critter eggs are blooming LOL..Yes, that works folks...been doing it from the beginning of time... (omg)...it dries up the eggs of fleas...wonder if that goes under abortion law ?????? :o ;)

Good night.. I mean...Good Bye !!

Until this trip to AK, my toilet never had paper OR big potties...just tinkle. Sensors don't work. NEVER shows empty. And after a couple of small uses, it shows full. I looked down there with a flashlight (tightly strapped to my wrist, of course), but have no idea what I'm looking at/for, so I just dump often!

When I first brought my 5er home I had read about using something called the GEO method for cleaning out the tanks. This uses powdered water softener ( or liquid) like Calgon 2 cups to a gallon of hot water, plus 1 cup of laundry detergent add to tanks. Something about the slickness of the water softener helps keep the sides of the tanks cleaner. I haven't used my holding tanks much yet but it did help the valves open easier which was a real bonus plus freshened up the tanks.

Re: TP friends of mine camp in campgrounds only and put nothing but liquids in holding tanks so that when they dump they use a garden hose. It does make emptying the tanks pretty slick. (umm pun intended)

I tried the calgon thing - didn't work any better than just tossing some dish soap down occasionally (for me, anyway).

I'm a firm believer in the tanks are there to be used. If someone were to tell me I had to go out in the middle of the night and use the cg potty because I can only do #1 in the potty - well, I'd become single if I wasn't already. I have an rv because I don't like having to use the other facilities - and I like to boondock. JMHO

Now, it's my choice to not always put the tp in the toilet - but that's mainly when I boondock. When hooked up - I do (or don't, lol) depending on my moods - and sometimes depending on the weather. Yep, the weather - I've been putting the tp in the separate container here in AK most of the time - so that I can dump on the nice days, not the rainy ones, and dump no more than once a week.

Ditto to small wastebasket in toilet area and throw away "clean" paper and through "dirty" paper down the toilet. Single Ply toilet paper important because it breaks down, USE only chemicals that are safe for septic tanks in your black water tank, some use Ridx, but be cautious, only a very very small amount as Ridx turns to cement if not enough water added. Another important factor, ALWAYS flush with lots of water when solids go down the toilet or you will have problems with clogs and the less TP the better!!! Scott makes single ply as does Costco and BJs I believe.
