What do I need?

Postby psjh » Thu Aug 23, 2012 10:13 am

I love this forum and your blogs. I've spent many hours reading them and get inspired. As a result I have made the decision to get a Sprinter 255 RKL. Now before I sign the contract what else do I need to add to the pruchase: extended warranty?, tire pressure monitor system?, gel coat protector?, anything else?
Thanks

Is this a travel trailer? I have always had motorhomes so no help with a trailer. If you decide to get an extended warranty try to get some reviews on the company. I had one with Easy Care Recreational Vehicle Service and it was worthless. If you are buying a new rig it should have a warranty and you don't have to buy one from the dealer. There are a lot of companies selling extended warranties.

I feel like the extra things that dealers want to do like scotchguard and gel coats are just something for them to make more money. Maybe ask that question on RV.Net and see what they have to say.

Over the years I have had a lot of tire problems. I think about getting a tire pressure monitor but haven't yet. I think one would be a good idea and maybe prevent some problems. A blow out can cause a lot of damage.

For me, the only thing I got at the dealership was the 5 year extended warranty since I am not real mechanically inclined. There are a lot of other things I am going to get at CW like the Slimline InMotion Satellite System.

Good Sam has an extended warranty plan that has pretty good reviews. You might want to compare that with what the dealer is selling. They might stand a better chance of still being in business when you need them than some of the other warranty companies.

If I was going to get an extended warranty it would be from Good Sam.

Is this a new vehicle? If so, I would hold off on the extended warranty. Purchase one when your vehicle warranty runs out ,if desired. Why pay for the warranty when you are already covered. I wouldn't bother with a protected gel coat from the dealer either. It would be less expensive to purchase on your own from an independent company. Again, should you decide you need it. Where will you be traveling most should help in your decision. I would say probably not. The tire monitor is probably a good thing. i have had tire problems and should probably buy one. One this to get is the road service from a company that deals with RVs. Don't leave home without it. Hope this helps. Linda

Good Sam also has a part that you can add on where if you are ill can't drive the rig back to where ever "home" is they will get it back for you
we thought we had it oops didn't wish we had have would have saved a lot of worry and headaches had we renewed it had it at one time...
Also you might want to have them add a life insurance into the contract in case of the death the rv is paid for I don't know yet if we did we wanted to but when I look at the paper it looks like it was over looked but one day I'm going to take it and have some one else check it over

My belief? Don't add anything to the purchase unless the value is more than what you'll pay. I'm not a believer in extended warranties, but some are - that's a personal decision. And they are not all created equal - so make sure you know what's covered. And what the deductible is, etc. Whether buying new or used, if from a dealer, I'd make sure you are GIVEN all the things you need to start out - like hoses to dump, etc. You can decide later if you want to replace things, but you want to know you're driving away with a completely usable rig.

We opted out of the dealer's extended warranty last year and got the Good Sam one along with their road side service plan. Those of you who know Ernie, he researches everything to death, and he determined that this is the best deal for us....Open Range RVs have a 2 yr. warranty so with the Good Sam warranty, we are covered for 5 yrs. total.... Also, Good Sam's Road Service covers both the truck & the 5er for towing, etc.
