Not a dumb question and can create a lot of discussion! I recently switched to Scott brand.

If you throw it away in a waste basket (Mitch recommends emptying the bathroom basket daily.....in her blog. :o )...you can use whatever kind your heart (and bottom) desire. :) Many of us do not put any of the toilet paper in the black tank. Especially if you are boondocking, your tank will last a lot longer ....i.e ....not fill up as fast.

If you just have to throw the paper down the chute, so to speak, you need to find one that is safe in septic systems....you need to use a lot more water and be very conservative on the amount of product you use.

Either way..."wet wipes" can be your friend....

I have been thinking about just what the two of you said. I usually use Scott but then
I was thinking of hanging a baggie in the bathroom for the TP. All of your advice will
probably save me a lot of grief! Thanks

1 ply tissue only....but you don't have to get the "RV" type....Scott TP is what we use....cheaper than the RV stuff... ;)

I use the Scott 1 ply also. Have for years. No problems yet. Just be sure you don't empty your black tank until it's about 3/4 full.

Whatever is on sale. I have a small trash can w/a lid in the bathroom that the TP goes into, then that trash goes out daily. If I was going to put all TP into the tank, I'd buy a septic-safe TP.

As small as my black tank is, I flush my TP. I use whatever is safe for septic. I don't use a whole lot at a time but I figure I would rather not deal with the waste, especially since there really isn't room for a trash can or even bag in the bathroom, unless I leave it in the bath tub.

I read somewhere to take a sheet of toilet paper and put it in a jar of water. Let it sit for a while and then shake it and see if it dissolves. Since I usually have hookups I just put the paper in the toilet. I camped with kids a few times this summer and I learned you really have to watch them with the paper and the water.

I've always used Scott TP...and the method was...(this sounds awful but only way to explain it)

# 1 goes in plastic bag...

#2 flush it down ....

What can I say...LOL....but I empty my bag daily..and hint I spray the bag with a little freshner I make up..

Like Fabreeze but cheaper... this way no odor...!

My holding tanks are huge size so I can go awhile without dumping......but remember dump black tank first then gray
tank afterwards...that's really important..and you know a lot of us made that mistake ...a long time ago..

Just my 2 pennies worth..!

I'm with Martha on the water/jar test. Put 1 square in, let it sit for a minute, and shake it up. If it disintegrates, then it is fine. I use Angel soft. Sometimes the "special" (read expensive) RV TP actually takes longer to break up. I have a big black tank too and have never had a problem. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to remind visitors to "go light" on TP use as they don't know any better if they are not RVers.

We use regular Northern toilet paper in our trailer. BUT! We don't throw any TP down into the tank. It all goes into a separate bag and that bag gets thrown out. I hate Scotts with a passion as the dang stuff always rips at the worst possible time. Nothing like it ripping and wiping your butt with your fingernails!!! OUCH! And the mess.

I use Quilted Northern, but not the most expensive kind. I did the glass test and it passed very well. It was recommended to me as a choice in another forum or web site or somewhere, but I did test it out.

I sometimes flush paper and so far have not had any problems, but when I am alone, I confess to using the baggie technique. If I am going to flush the paper down, I use very little of it. If I am alone and can stuff it into a baggie, I can use a lot more of it.

Unless I am short of water or getting close to a full tank, I also use a lot of water to keep everything liquid.

I have a sealed container for TP - it's not big at all - and I only empty it when full - not daily. But I do flush some - especially when I'm sitting with hookups. I try to flush very little when boondocking. My tanks are small and the longer I can make them last, the better.

Make sure you flush out the black tank as you can. Mine really likes it when I can put in a large bag of ice (to an empty tank) and drive several hours - then dump it. Cleans the tank better than anything else I do. Will try to do that when I leave here or shortly thereafter.
