Dawn, I am so sorry ... I think you never know someone until you see them go through a divorce or how they deal with death and inheritance. The latter often breaks families apart.
Rushing to closing and cutting big checks -- while expedient -- may be a rash move and not serve you. I know very well that in early grief it is easy to be stampeded into rash action. Closing is an artificial deadline -- and your buyer may wait. But even so ... please take a breath. Ask your realtor to take the buyer's temperature on a delay. Do as others here suggest and consult an attorney.
My heart goes out to you, Dawn. Early grief is a tender time. Take care of yourself first.
PS: as I understand it, you have to have be married to a former spouse for at least 10 years before you are eligible for SS survivor benefits at age 60.
