Down to the last crap...

Postby Getupngo » Wed Jul 25, 2012 11:19 am

Okay, I have a certain amount of stuff in my garage to move out. I have a certain amount of space in my storage unit. One is more than the other.

I could load a bunch of said stuff into the trailer and haul it to St. George. But that would still leave a storage unit deficit. Tried to call Goodwill to pick up some furniture from the storage unit to donate, but they didn't call me back. I'll have to take another tack ...

Arggghhh ...

I have to keep telling myself these are LUXURY PROBLEMS. Oh, no. I have too much stuff. Oh, no, I sold my house and it is closing soon. Oh, no ...

I'm such a brat.

But still .... Arggghhh ...

Is it's furniture and stuff - do you have a Habitat for Humanity ReStore?

LOL, Janice. Take a deep breath. I am such a brat too. My problems of what to take or not are so small in comparison to a lot of other people. Never even had to stage my house or deal with a realtor to sell it. I have been so spoiled. Chuck has always made sure I had everything I ever said I wanted. Guess he is still doing it! I am glad, though, that which storage to use is the extent of your worries now.

OKAY!! I made an executive decision!

To solve my "too-much-stuff-for-too-little-storage-space" dilemma, I decided to use the same approach as my original "hire-the-movers-first" answer to the "how-do-I-get-started?" question. I just rented another storage unit -- larger than the first.

In other words, if all else fails, write a check.

So ... tomorrow I'll move the rest of the garage contents, er, crap, into the new storage unit. Then I'll begin moving all the cartons from the old storage unit to the new. Next week, I'll get some folks to load out furniture from the old storage, add the few items of furniture left in the house, and haul it all to the new unit. Then, except for a monthly payment to Extra Space Storage, I'll be free to consider all of my options.

And perhaps I'll be a little less crazy. Just a little.

Methinks you're on to something, Dawn. :D (If for no other reason that I've reverted to speaking in Olde English.)

Took two loads in my ATV trailer from the garage to the new storage unit today. Then I loaded up 80% of the boxes from the old unit. But when I got to then new storage place, there was a BACKHOE cutting across the driveway. Now, really!

I got home, backed the loaded trailer in to the garage, and took 800mg of Vitamin I (ibuprophen). Called the place and was told they have put a metal plate across the trench and I can come back now. Now that I've slowed down, don't know if I CAN go back.

Glad I didn't have anyone with me that I was paying by the hour.

I plead guilty to having rented a 10 x 20 storage unit, thinking it was WAY too big, and then filling it up literally to the brim.

I will probably sort through it a bit next time I go to that area, but I was so exhausted that it was much easier to store stuff than to continue sorting. On a positive note, I did toss at least 60% of what I owned. I also lost 5 pounds the weekend of the move, which was no doubt caused by my stress.

Judy, I have already gotten rid of so much stuff (or taken it to St. George) that I can fit it all in a 10 x 15. I just need to get rid of a couple more pieces of furniture I don't want to haul around with me.

It's nice living a lighter life. Not quite as light as some of our more free-and-easy friends, but I like it.

Life is good.

It took us 5 years to go from a large storage unit to a smaller unit to a few boxes that fit in our van. Those might go into our son's attic this year. carold

Carold, I occasionally remind myself of what you said about having a large house full of antiques. My downsizing doesn't even compare but I do hope this will be more like 5 months rather than 5 years.
Judy, I have a 10X16 building coming and no doubt I will put many containers in it with a big :?: . I have unloaded all closets except my pantry. My office seems the more daunting. I will give a last call to my family this week then it starts getting put in the 'this must go' pile.
And yes, out of sight, out of mind is so true.

when I started downsizing, I had two storage units, 2 storage units, and then briefly had 3 until I got more sorting done and reduced it down to one over
the course of four years. Finally was able to get rid of that last one. Now, everything I have and own will fit in the rv, although the tubs of yarn (LOTS) are
stacked in the bedroom along the side of the bed.

Ava,

I saw that about lots of tubs of yarn!

Now I don't feel so bad about my space bags of fabric and yarn.
