Camp Ground in Michigan

Postby lak99 » Thu Jul 19, 2012 2:00 am

If any of you have camped in south eastern Michigan can you recommend
a campground that would be a good first-time outing? I live just north
of Novi at Walled Lake, Mi. I would like to keep it fairly close to home
until I get used to camping again.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I spent one night at Proud Lake Recreation Area. I had electric only, but the sites were not bad, and the campground was not too far from the lake.

The only problem was that the GPS took me via downtown Milford rather than directly from I 96--not a good drive through a small town with narrow streets.

Another place I had reservations at but did not stay at is Sterling State Park along Lake Erie down by Monroe. It has full hookups, also, if you want them. I forfeited my deposit because of problems getting an Ohio drivers license.

I must have missed your introduction. Where are you from? I just recently moved from Canton to my motorhome, and lived there for 30+ years.

Hi Leslie,

Just made a post in your Introduction section to you. I'm so far behind in reading those introductions. Gets that way every summer.

I too am from MI. Live way up north near Gaylord. Originally from St. Clair Shores but that was 35 years ago. Lived there for about 28 years before moving north.

As to southeastern Michigan campground, I can't be of much help there, but I do have friends who camped in the Brighton recreation area I think it was and really enjoyed it. As Judy said, there's Sterling State Park south of Detroit. There are also a number of state parks and recreation areas scattered around down that way. Look up Michigan State Parks and Rec. areas in your subject heading and see what you come up with. I'm sure there are probably some private campgrounds around too.

Too bad you aren't in the mood for driving up north here as I work at Otsego Lake State Park here and would be around if you needed anything. I sold my TT earlier this spring and am currently not camping at the moment. Reining in expenses so to speak for a year or so, then plan to look for another RV to travel in. I camped alone with just my two dogs these last couple of years. Hauled, hitched and unhitched my own TT and enjoyed it. But I was getting tired of camping alone and really want to hit the road and see new places and things.

I will be interested in seeing where you wind up going. If you have any desire to head north, I can advise you on a number of state parks too.

Have a great day.

Judy and Sue,

Thank you for answering me. I realized after I posted this that i probably put it in the
wrong section. But I am just learning how to navigate this site.

I currently live in Walled Lake. It is just north of Novi and east of Pontiac. I am east
and a little south of Milford, Judy.

Sue, I may come up north but right now I am having my truck serviced. Then I need to have
someone go through my camper before I can go anywhere. They have been sitting here for
6 years since I moved out from the Seattle area.

Thanks to both of you for your advice and I will try to let you know when I come your way. Or
let me know when you come my way.
