Arrived in South Dakota

Postby retiredhappy » Mon Jul 16, 2012 8:56 pm

After three days on the road in 100 degree heat Carole and I made it to Custer South Dakota. No pictures because there is nothing scenic between Texas and South Dakota. First picture in SD is of, of course, buffalo.

I had forgotten how beautiful this area is. Rolling hills and black hills covered with pine trees.

Got our glass of wine and fixed dinner.

Nice site with trees.

I am LOVING driving the smaller rig. Its soooooooo nice to just pull into a gas station and back into a site. Once, we actually made a u-turn to get cheaper gas.

Now for the bad news. The refrigerator worked great at home when I plugged it in to be sure everything was working. The minute we hit the road the frig stopped cooling. Its slightly cool but not enough so we used an ice chest for the trip here. This campground has a great RV guy. I used him in 2009 for an electrical problem and he came over when we arrived and said, you got it, I need a new frig. The frig is 13 years old so I'm not surprised.

Other than that small problem, we're enjoying the trip. Right now sitting outside and enjoying a glass of wine and a cooler evening. First time in weeks I've been able to sit outside without sweating buckets.

Dakotas is on my bucket list, if it has pines I gotta go there. I've been in almost all the states since I was 10 years old except that
north area of the us. The pictures look beautiful, can hardly wait to go.

If you're in Custer area stop in the Cowboy Restaurant and say hi to my son Sean...this is his 8th season working there.

I am anxious to see the Dakotas too. I love your pics. So sorry your frig stopped working. That happened to Chuck and me the last time we took the 5th wheel camping. Since I am trading it in, not going to worry about replacing it.

Karen, make sure that you post lots of pics!!! Both South and North Dakota are states that I have totally missed being in.

I'm beginning to think that there are fridge gremlins who have joined the forum to find out where we all are and have mounted their attack.

So glad you two are out and about and enjoying your first trip in the new to you rig - even with the fridge problem. Sorry to hear it needs to be replaced, but, yep, after 13 years, not surprising.

I'm laughing that you say there's nothing to see between TX and SD. I remember lots to see - which surprised me. But, of course, that would depend on the route you take. All the years I took 80 from Chicago to Denver and hated NE - traveling it 3 years ago different routes, I realized there are interesting places there -

Have fun, and keep enjoying and sharing pics, please. And say hi to Carole from me.

That's wonderful that you're loving your new rig!

An RV fridge is pricey, right?

Hi Karen
Glad to see that you are enjoying your Trek. The refrigerator doesn't cool well when the temps are high. Since the replacement is pricey, I wouldn't give up on it until it doesn't work in cooler temps. There is a Cyberrally for Treks owners and there have been many posts regarding refri and hot weather.
Photos are beautiful and one of these days I am going to meet you and get my wineglass.
Keep Trekkin'

When running an RV refrigerator on propane, it works to keep it cooler by running a "refrigerator" fan inside----found in Camping World and some Walmarts. I run mine on two D cell batteries for over two or three months at a time, and it has never failed to make the temperature cooler in there. I now even use it when running on electricity as it is so cheap to run.

I learned this trick from an old camper while at my first bluegrass festival with my old (1980s) trailer, and found it to be a miraculous fix for warm temperatures in there.

I'm jealous of the wonderful temps you are experiencing..we're dying down here with the humidity. sorry about the fridge but heck you wanted to try out all the neat places to eat anyway, didn't you?
