Taking a poll on who wants to see my new bruise!

Postby Travelinana » Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:32 am

Well I did it again and this time I was very scared. I was carrying out some things to my garage and I missed a step landing on my left arm (that has just healed from last fall) and my butt. In a few days I will have a real shiner on left 'cheek'. As I lay there I thought..now you have really done it, you're in the middle of a huge transition and you will be doing therapy for a broken hip. I was so scared and mad at myself but decided to see if I could put weight on it and I could!! I was praising God as I continued to work but more carefully for sure. I won't be telling my son this time, don't need him calling Kelly. He will ask about my arm but I'll say I bumped it hard. My hip is very sore and a little swollen. I have a battery in this hip for spinal stimulator and it narrowly missed it. My mother fell alot her last years and had some bruised hips but no breaks so hopefully I have her bones.

Ah, the secrets we keep from sons!

I once fell down the stairs carrying my son when he was about a year old, and never dropped him, but ended up with a massive bruise on my rear. You will have some sore sitting for a while, but at least you did not break anything!

GF, you need to be more careful! We already have a couple of girls recuperating, we don't need another one!!

Holy crap woman!!!! Please, please be careful!!!! Maybe get a small hand truck to move/carry those boxes and that way you can see the steps.

My knees are getting to the point that I am very careful on steps and on uneven ground. Most of the time with the steps and the door here on the trailer I go down the steps backwards.

No more boo boos!!!

Really glad you didn't break anything. I have remind myself (often) that I'm not twenty anymore and don't have the balance I used to have. I look in the mirror and wonder who the hell that old lady is.

Yes, we are not spring chickens any more. Maybe fall or winter. Seriously, Nan, be careful. Slow down a bit so you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Nancy - So glad you didn't break anything!! My sister that is 7 years younger than me fell a couple of months ago and broke her leg. Fortunately, her husband was home at the time when she fell. She sure didn't like the inconvenience of recuperating but was so glad it wasn't worse. Thankfully, I have never fallen and I try to be careful but accidents happen.
Like Red said, be careful so you can enjoy your travels.

glad you didn't get any broken bones. I remember a couple years ago I had to tell myself to slow down when running around.
I still run around and move with a purpose but I do it just a tad slower now and more careful cause I certainly can't afford
injuries either, not to mention how it would disrupt my lifestyle.

I have to remind myself all the time not to go down the steps with both hands full. I try to have one hand on the grab bar when I get out of my motorhome. I almost fell in the parking lot at the grocery store because I was in a hurry and I stepped wrong with my sandal.

Glad you didn't break anything.

I feel pretty dumb...maybe this time I have learned to slow down and always wear the right shoes. I will admit this was probably because I was sock footed. My left cheek is not a pretty sight, I can imagine how much worse it will look in a few days.
It's so wonderful to have sweet caring friends.

The trick with bruises is to put ice on it to begin with to shrink the blood vessles so there is less bruising. Then later, after the bruise appears, use hot packs to open up the vessles to encourage to the blood to get released from that area to speed up the healing.

I will pass on seeing the bruise and just take your word for it!

Good that you still have some bounce left in you.....bounce is better than a break. :? When I do fall, it always surprises me how quickly physical accidents can happen....it reminds me of how quickly our priorities and life circumstances can change.....one thunk to head or one broken bone and there will be serious detours.....

Besides our pride hurting I guess that it is always a good time to say thank you for another near miss.... :)

Nancy - please clarify which cheek we're talking about here before I vote on whether or not I want to see the bruise. And I'm NOT referring to left or right! :o

I fell a couple of years ago, 3 times on the same knee within one year. The last fall was pretty severe and laid me up for a couple of weeks. After that I realized that living alone means changing assumptions about someone being there in case I fall. I asked the apartment manager to install a grab bar outside my shower and I feel much safer getting in and out of the tub. I hadn't thought about one near the RV steps but that makes really good sense. Is it pretty much a given? Or something I need to add to a shopping checklist?

Most motorhomes and trailers have a bar by the side door to hang on to. Mine has one outside and an inside one as I go up the steps. Falls happen so fast. I have fallen off the bottom step because I wasn't holding on and couldn't stop myself. In our house I put up a grab bar by the shower and use it as a towel rack. If someone has to hold on it won't break like a towel rack might.
