When going up a mountain, when you feel your coach jumping in and out of gears, shift down one. Check your tacometer to make sure you're not over reving in the lower gear. Check your manual to find out what you should be tacing in each gear. You will probably have to slow down, but some of those gas engines can out pull my diesel rig...but only when I'm towing the jeep. LOL! And be sure and keep an eye on your heat gauge. If you start heating, drop a gear and slow down. Again, check your manual to see what max heat is for your rig.

Going down is trickier. Slow down to the speed you want to go down and gear down at least one gear before you start down. Watch your speed, when you've gained 5mph over what you want to come down, apply the brakes FIRMLY to slow back down to the speed you're comfortable with. Do not ride the brakes, you'll burn them out. You may have to drop another gear to stay where you want to without applying the brakes to often. Play it safe, go down at a lower speed than what you may think you're comfortable with until you get a feel for the coach, the road and your capabilities. Your first couple of mountains will be knuckle biters and you may have to change your knickers when you get to the bottom, but pretty soon you'll be comfortable doing it.

I most definitely would NOT take 89 into Prescott, and as much mountain driving as I've done, I would come back a different way even if it was further. It's a blast on a motorcycle, tho!! LOL! 17 to 69 is a much better route for an rv. IMHO.

I think they sponser Camp something or other, the one sold at Camping World. You also get your CW membership now with Good Sam and 10% off at selected cg's. It's not much, but every little bit helps.

When I was trucking the rule was to go down in the same gear you had to use to go up when it was a steep grade.

Good Sam used to have Camp Club USA but they seem to have dropped that and are now affiliated with Passport America.

Marda, do you have a link for that? I can't find anything on the Good Sam website showing any affiliation with PA. Maybe I need to log out as a member to see it - but if you have the link, that would help. I want to see if there's a discount - before I renew with either :)

I just did more research and it appears GS is not affiliated with PA. They found that their Camp Club (which they owned) wasn't profitable enough and SOLD it to PA. At least that's the best I can find.

Beth, that was what I found when I went to join Passport America. Got a message that they already had me in their system and to call. I did and they told me they had my records from Camp Club USA. I just had to do my renewal and it automatically converted to Passport America. I got my PA cards with renewal date.

Welcome! I have Passport Amer, KOA and Good Sam. PA paid for itself the first time I used it. Debating whether to renew KOA since the discount is only 10% and doesn't apply on the BOGO stays. I did join a Good Sam chapter so we can camp every month. It's fun, but local. The womenrv site is the best for contacts all over the place and asking questions.
