Arrived to my summer home

Postby Bethers » Mon May 21, 2012 10:58 pm

I arrived in Valdez today - my home for the next 3+ months. Actually, got in about 1, setup - then walked over to the LuLu Belle and was talking, next thing I know Fred (with his wife Megan, the owners) said, "if you want, you could put in some time today" and next thing I knew I was working. Tomorrow the Coast Guard does their inspection - I'll actually be expected to know the procedure for "Man Overboard" (or woman) and for getting us untied and re-tied at the dock. We spent a couple minutes on both. And they'll tell them we haven't really done it yet - although we did take the boat out today and they through a life ring overboard and we pretended it was a man. There was one of the other people there and she's worried about tomorrow. I told her not to - we just can do our best - they can't expect us to have it down when we are just getting our feet wet, so to speak. Then I spent an hour or so getting out all the life vests and checking to make sure all the little "at sea lights" attached to them were working. I found 2 that need new connections to the vest and a couple that need either new batteries, to to make sure the connection to the batteries is good - and came back to walk Peaches.

I forgot how much Valdez has - including a Safeway. A small hospital, dentists, plenty of restaurants, including a Mexican one - ah be still my heart. I'd probably be better off if it's not good lol But they don't have an audiologist and one of my hearing aids needs a part replaced. Megan told me someone comes in once a month or so - so will see if that's soon. If not, will go to the hospital/clinic and see what they say. If neither works, will call my old audiologist in Alabama and see if I can overnight this one to him and have him replace the part and overnight it back.

My AT&T signal is wonderful - better than 3 years ago, so I'll probably go ahead and cancel the Verizon air card now as I was simply waiting to make sure I'd have good internet here and I do. It's amazing over the years I've been full-timing how much better coverage has gotten - and how many areas not covered are now, including some areas here in Alaska that have surprised me when the phone would beep that I had messages.

Will, hopefully, get my blog up-dated tomorrow - but then, it won't need an up-date as often, so no hurry.
