Equalizer Hitch - Installation Question

Equalizer Hitch - Installation Question

Postby mitch5252 » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:00 am

When I took delivery of the trailer in 2007 (late summer), the dealer set up the Equalizer hitch with both the van and trailer empty. I do not believe they made allowances for "future" weight.

Do you think I should, on my way out to AK, make an appointment for the dealer to adjust the hitch, or at least check it, for proper installation.

I was reading how to do it online, but I don't think I'd have the strength to get those huge (and somewhat rusty) bolts out...

Or should I just go for it (and hope and pray...).

Mitch, I'd do the dealer thing, if you don't know someone who tows with WD's. Not scheduled to pick up the muscle till we get out of the country. I never had WD's on my TT, just a sway. Not sure how much we as a group have knowledge about it. Liz, as a boater, would probably know about them.

It's been a few years since I read about it, but my understanding is that if you measure from the ground to the lip of your fender, both front and back tires, without the trailer, figure out the difference between the measurement, then do the same when you are hitched up and the difference should be the same. Meaning the WD hitch is set right because the van is still sitting like it was before, as far as level, but of course a bit lower because of the weight.

You mean the van is still sitting like it was before - hitched or unhitched?

You're smart.

Yes, it will probably be lower because of the weight, BUT the van will still be level front to back.
