Deep Sigh - Now it's the furnace...

Deep Sigh - Now it's the furnace...

Postby mitch5252 » Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:09 pm

A year or so ago (maybe two), I replaced the original thermostat with a Hunter battery operated one.

It worked fine. Batteries are fine (at least there's no "low battery" signal)

Thermo set for 90 degrees.

Doesn't turn on.

Any clue what to check next?

Maybe I'll just have to make a fur coat from The Little Beast...???

Deep and heavy sigh.

Maybe the battery is completely dead, with not enough left to even light up the low battery light. Change the battery & see if that works.

Nope. Changed batteries. No go. Fuse appears fine. No breakers tripped.
I hate trailers. Oh, wait. That's not true. What I really hate is not having George around to fix all this shit.

Okay, better mood this morning. Furnace is working. I twirled the NEW batteries and flipped the two switches up down up down up down, etc...furnace kicked on several seconds after having done that. Go figure...

At least that saved Abby's skin. Literally.

So, I'm back to being happy (for now...)

I hate furnaces too. Just make sure you bring a small electric heater with you. The furnaces on my first 3 motorhomes never worked right. If they would come on at all they would run until it got so hot I had to turn it off and after that it would only blow cold air. I got tired of having the stupid things worked on. I have never even turned the furnace in this one on. I bought it used and would have to take out a couch to get to it to have it checked. I just use the heat strip in the air conditioner. I don't plan on being where I need that much heat.

I'm with Martha - I have never even used my furnace. I have a 1500 watt ceramic heater we normally use. But then, I haven't done any dry camping so far. But the furnace in my little trailer is the same size as much larger trailers so I understand that it tends to really cycle, plus it's a gas hog and can empty a 20 lb propane bottle quickly.

I'm not bringing the electric heater. I have a Coleman propane heater I can use. I also have the heat strip on the A/C to take the chill off.

Last night, I thought about putting the electric heater back in, but I decided more wine would be better...

I always have a window cracked. And I wouldn't sleep with it on.
Thanks for the reminder, though...I probably would have forgotten the crack window thing! :)

Those of you who never use your gas furnaces, must also never boondock. You can't use the electric when boondocking, unless you plan to run your generator every time you want heat. It's very important to me that my furnace works. I always had to be super careful how often I ran mine, because it does take battery power, and I only had one battery - would run it down fast.

That said, I wouldn't be without my little electric heaters when I have hookups and the electric is paid for with them.

Mitch, I'm glad to hear all is working now. Whew.
