Great boondocking location if you bring loppers. Actually, not a lot of easy places for rigs to park and not block the roads - but the one I found was wonderful. And one other, but the road was too rutted for me to go to that one. Then, about 1/4 mile before reaching the lake, is an area any size rig could get to and park - just would need to walk into the lake. Which maybe I should have done instead of scratching my rig this time, eh?

Well thanks for our one day at the water :) it was beautiful......

When the temps go up during the day are you able to maintain with just the fans?

I maintain with just the windows open - not even fans. Just try to protect the side the sun is beating on. Must admit, now that I have solar, an awning would be nice :) Geez, did I just say that?

Enjoyed your blog and the pictures! I've been to Carlsbad many times but never out to that reservoir. Sorry you got the scratch! I'm wondering if you ever feel unsafe camping out in areas like that alone? Otherwise the idea of getting out away from crowds would definitely be inviting at times. Looked peaceful there and lovely sunset.

I felt unsafe at a gas station once - didn't even stay for gas, let alone to spend the night. So far, I haven't felt unsafe at any of the locations I've found to boondock. If so- would move on along.

good to know! Yes, if you get a feeling about a place or something sends up a red flag then its best to follow that inner voice that warns you. Nice to hear that this is not something that happens often at all.

Another question I have thought about is what do you do about weather? Of course I know you can't do anything about weather! (wasn't it Will Rogers who said "everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it"?) But do your try to avoid certain areas at the time of the year when storms are likely there etc?? I've seen a few RV campgrounds that have storm shelters but I don't know how common that is.

I'm one that mostly ignores the warning to shelters - and drives others crazy. But until recent years my dogs weren't allowed in shelters with me- and as long as that was true, I didn't go either. Now, when I was in TX and we got an evacuation order for a hurricane, you best believe I evacuated. And when I'm somewhere with wind, I try to get off the roads and be safe during it. I lived most of my life in tornado country, and it's next to impossible to avoid being anywhere where something will happen. I do try to avoid too much winter, though. And I do watch the weather reports before I get on the road. But since I live on the road - that's just to decide to not travel one day and travel the next, basically. I try to give myself extra time - like getting to my AK job - I'm leaving earlier than I want to spend too much time sightseeing in Canada and on the way - because I'll probably still be hitting snow - but will give myself double the time needed to get there - so if any bad weather hits, I sit it out. If I get there early, that's fine - but want to get there safely.

Makes sense, thanks for your response. I guess its true that you'd never go anywhere if you had to wait for perfect conditions, or assurance of no storms. I saw your blog on the boat you are going to be working on, looks like a great adventure and since you've been on that boat before...you apparently don't have sea-sickness issues! I'm looking forward to reading about it! Now I'm wondering what Peaches will do when you are on board...

Sleep - and want exercise when I get home and want to relax :) And no, I don't get seasick - but the waters on the sound there are pretty mild. Unlike in some other areas.

I went to Carlsbad as a child, only remember screaming about the elevator. I was 5, an AR hillbilly and had never been in an elevator. For those of you who like caves, another living cave and if I'm not mistaken is even larger than Carlsbad is Blanchard Springs Cavern. It is in www.mountainviewarkansas.com only about 40 miles from me. This might be a good GTG spot for the fall.
