Truck Camper or Travel Trailer?

My daughter and I have been kept apart for 3 years. When I get her back (this summer..fingers crossed!) I want to just be with her - in nature. I am looking at either a truck camper or a truck and trailer. I will have to buy both. I would love any suggestions from you ladies out there. I will put many miles on it in the next few years as I will drive from the Canadian Border to the Florida Keys several times with in the next few years - Ice fishing to beach time!

Hi and Welcome. Good luck with your daughter.

I can't help with the TC or TT - there are good reasons for both. The main reason I'd think for you to decide - well 2 things - are you comfortable towing and how much space do you need. The TT needs to be towed and you can get much more space. The TC is part of the truck, easier in that way, and great for some places you might want to travel. You need to figure out what you want and why- then which might be answered for you.

I'm sure others will have much more to say on that subject.

There was a post on here not long ago with questions about truck campers, but I can't find it - maybe someone else can. I think Colliemom (Sue) started it.

After towing a 5er, I love the size and ease of my truck camper. The 5er is for winter in Arizona, but the TC goes in the summer. If you can deal with the small space, it is a great way to go.

Welcome Angelina! Glad to hear you are getting a chance to get reaquainted with your daughter (love the name Catalina!). How old is she?

As far as TT vs TC, from what I have read and heard, a TC can be harder to handle in wind on the freeways and they are smaller inside, but they are easier to get into smaller areas and for parking. However, when you park at a campground, you will either have to remove the camper at your site (not sure how difficult that is) if you want to go sightseeing with the truck, or keep it on the truck and unhook everything (water, sewer, elect, etc) each time you want to take the truck somewhere, and rehook it all when you get back to your site. TT are bigger of course and you have to consider that when driving and parking but they give you more living space. At campsites, you can just unhitch from the truck when you want to go somewhere for the day. It all depends too, on where you plan on staying (boondocking, etc) and for how long (days, weeks, months...) at each location.

Welcome to the Forum. What to buy....research, research, research. Your individual needs are what will make the decision. We all have our own opinions on every TT, TC, 5er, Class B, Class C, or Class A. I have owned a TT, a Class C and now have a Class A. I can't advise you on any experience except what I have had. I find that wind is a factor in driving....period and it doesn't matter what you are driving. I haven't driven a TC so I really can't talk about that. So the things you might want to put on your consideration list is, cost of tow vehicle, cost of TT, space available, weight of carrying capacity with the amount of storage being considered, size of holding tanks, and where you intend to go with what you get and how many people will be contained and for how long. Then research, research, research. Good luck and above all have fun looking for your new house/toys.

Catalina is 12, and I cannot wait for our girl time! I've missed her so! It has been a horrible injustice and its soon to be made right. I send out goodness to he Universe hourly - its been very painful for her and I. We have alot to catch up on, and I certainly do not want this to be a bad experience by making a wrong decision and putting us in a bind. Thank you to all the ladies that have responded and welcomed me! I'm over joyed knowing I have a team to go to for advice with this new adventure. I am going on Thursday to look through some TT and TC, and Im sure I will get some ideas doing that. I'm in no hurry, so gathering information/research is what I will do! Some good humor - I have a grand-baby on the way -one of my three sons- so my older adult kids have already been calling my new purchase the "CRIB ON WHEELS". LOL! Have a blessed weekend ya'll!

Hi Angelina and welcome to the forum. I have a truck camper and will confirm that the space is SMALL. It's a good fit for me and the puppies. If traveling with more than one (or a couple) be aware that there is NO privacy or any place for anyone to have their own space. It's the design.

I would suggest going to an RV show and seeing all that's out there and then decide what you want and need as others have suggested.
