Hi everyone,

My name is Dawn and I live just outside Hudson Oaks, TX. I am learning to do everything RV. My husband had always handled everything outside and I did the inside. He has become disabled and I am now learning everything about our RV and how to do the maintenance. I still have to learn how to hitch and unhitch the fiver. Have yet to pull it too. Going to get friends to help me with that so we can continue to take trips. Our trips are very limited now, but that is OK as long as we still get to go when DH is up to it. I love to be in the RV. Think that I will probably work up to full timing if any thing happens to him and my 80 yr old Mom who lives next door to us. I will definitely be doing a lot of reading in this and other RV forums while I learn. I would love to make friends that I might could meet up with at some point.

Hi and Welcome, Dawn. Glad to have you with us. I think the largest group of women in one state in this forum is in TX, with many more in La - so you should be able to meet up with lots - sooner than you would think.

Glad that you are learning it all - and going to stay with it. It's such a wonderful lifestyle.

LOL. First thing I learned to do was unclog the toilet. Found out one of my grandkids had put cellophane in the toilet about a year and a half ago, right before my husband got so sick. We got friends to pull the RV for us to Lake Murray a few weeks ago and all of a sudden, the toilet was not flushing. Went to Ardmore and bought a plunger and a snake. About 2 hours of snaking later, we had a toilet that was draining. Woohoo! Now frig is not cooling. Found that out on that trip too. I am trying to learn a little electrical to see if I can fix that too. Prior to this the last time out, DH jackknifed the FW through the back glass of the passenger section of the PU. He did this twice while I watched in horror. He was going to put the RV into it's parking place. This was when we found out his dementia had gotten worse. It took months to get the PU and RV back after all the repairs. Now fixing what has gone wrong while RV was not being used all those months. Amazing that things that were working, now aren't. Tells me we need to go as often as possible. LOL

Think you can probably leave that plunger at home as RV toilets don't work like home toilets but good for you in getting things to work. I don't know where your town is Texas is but we spent many wonderful weekends at Lake Murray when we lived in Wichita Falls and our kids were young. You must have a short bed pick-up if the 5th wheel hit it so you will have to be extra careful with those sharp corners. You can definitely learn to pull it--lots of us do it by ourselves all the time. Practice backing in a parking lot if you can. Take it easy and go on short trips until you feel comfortable. Welcome.

It's a long bed Dully, but the crew cab part is big and he turned more than 180 degrees. He literally put the front cap of the RV into the back seat area on the PU. You would had to have been there. I did not think it could be done either. After he was put back on his meds for this, a week later, he could not believe he had done it. We live just west of Fort Worth in Parker County. I figure I will practice in the pasture first, then on the road, then in a parking lot to learn how to back it up.

Couple more pics. I love our RV. I could live in it. It is where I am my most relaxed. It may be the settings, since I don't look and constantly see something I need to get done. If I ever do sell the house and go full time, I will probably buy something new, maybe a TT and a new Tow Veh. That way I would have the warranties for a while while I get used to living full time in RV and going everywhere I want to go.

Welcome, Dawn! Very nice 5er! I think you will do just fine. We all have a learning curve and even then there is always something new to learn. Lots of RVing experienced gals on this forum to help us out, too.

Thanks all for the kind messages. May be sooner than what I am prepared for for me to take my first solo trip. We have just returned from doctor's office and my husband has been put on hospice. Our doctor knows my husband really well and knows he wants to die at home, so even though he should have been put in hospital today, he has guaranteed my husband he will not do that to him. He says DH won't make another 6 months. Thanks for the smiles this morning.

So sorry for your news Dawn. I have the same feeling when I am off in my RV. If you really think you want warranty coverage, you can get it on your current RV. Take a look at Coachnet through Good Sam. There are also others. Some people just bank the amount of money they would pay for the warranty coverage and save it in case they have to do repairs. It is good to have something else to think about when you are going through rough times. Unless you think you want a real small TT, most people would tell you 5th wheels are easier to tow. I've had both and like my 5th wheel better.
