Possible Christmas Gift?

OK - I'm an animal lover - and I spend some money for various charities, lots of them animal related. This one I love - because I can give it as a present - some of you might be interested, or not, either is ok, but I wanted to pass it on:

Adopt Imperiled Animals

You might be surprised by some of the animals on the list - and why.

Another neat charity is Heifer International.....they help poor countries by giving a pair of animals and having them share the donation in so many ways. A pair of cows, goats, chickens, etc give a tremendous amount of food for the small villages. My sister is a photo journalist for them and travels all over the world photographing them . I had never heard of them until she started working for them. I dont know if they even advertise.

I am always amazed at her stories and pictures. During her travels she has picked up several languages that she speaks fluently....guess she is the "brains" in the family for language acquisition. Im still struggling to learn Spanish.

This is precisely what I am doing for my family this year! National Wildlife sent me a brochure on how to do it, and the choices.....pretty much the same link you sent, Beth. All of us have enough 'stuff' as it is, and these animals need some help. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get busy here and order these before summer comes!

I'm going to check out Heifer International, too, Karen. What a great job your sister has! Hope to find some of her photos on that site!

Hope you have good weather for moving on to Eureka for your next job stint. AND, maybe some spending cash from that local casino!!

Happy travels!

Soos, her pictures are under Darcy Kiefel.....she gets credits listed usually for her pics. She also has a website with lots of her pics from around the world. I live vicariously thru her ha ha I have never been out of the country except for Canada and Mexico. She has lived in various villages with her knapsack for her pillow UMMMMMMM NOT ME I need my feather bed and high thread count sheets ha ha

Karen, I agree! Heifer is a wonderful organization and it helps WOMEN (because if you give men $$, they go get drunk and chase women) support their families. What especially touches me is that after a family receives animals, they give offspring to other families, in a ceremony called "Passing on the Gift." It gives people -- too poor to ever have enough to share -- the dignity to share their wealth within the community.

I decided this Christmas to donate $100 -- and I gave a catalog to my three grandsons, and they will decide how to spend the money. They can buy some chicks and rabbits, plus a share of a heifer, or oxen, or honeybees. It'll require them to do math, but more importantly, they will think about how life is so different among people who live with far less than they do.

A friend of mine "gifted" me with a donation to Heifers International this year. It was the first I'd heard of them, but is a neat idea. As was said, it is a gift that keeps on giving.
