When Water Pressure Regulators Die

My city water system worked for the first 18 hours or so and then just stopped flowing. I tested each component (CG spigot, regulator, hose) and individually they worked fine, but attached to RV inlet, no flow.

So my question : can a regulator stop the flow altogether after some 18 hours of working fine? The sign at the CG check-in warned of 90 psi, so I didn't dare skip the regulator, but it was a cheap one (no dial), so I don't really know what happened. My stopgap solution was to remove the regulator and fill the fresh water tank and just use that.

So did the high pressure kill it? Did it commit suicide trying to protect my rig? Is it even dead?

Those regulators sometimes just stop working. Sometimes something gets stuck, other times, it's suicide. You can try flushing it out by reversing the flow, but requires having opposite hose fittings. Best thing it to get a new one and keep a spare. :?

its also possible that the screen thingy in the hose is clogged with deposits. The regulators are cheap enough to keep a spare on hand. Think I paid $3 for mine at walmart.

I was thinking that it might be the screen at the water intake point on your rv. You might even have an inline filter that you don't know about somewhere in the rig.

Yep, what ava and Vickie said....and The Sultan says if you have one of those "inline" water filters on your hose or one somewhere in the rig that filters with charcoal, they sometime will clog up when not used often...the charcoal will dry up and become a huge lump of "charcoal"....

Sounds like I should pick up a backup one of these. The one I have was really cheap, so I will look for a better one next time.

I got fed up with my regulators - cheap and expensive ones. Rarely (gasp) put mine on anymore. Used to always. Had them fail over and over - and had them give me such low pressure sometimes that I hated them. That said, I understand why we SHOULD use them, and if I ever have problems because I don't, will have no one but me to blame. But yes, they do act up.

Beth, I have one of the regulators with the gauge and have really low pressure everywhere we go. Had been afraid not to use it though. May take it off today and see if it makes a difference. If not, it may be my whole house filter needs to be changed already.
