Looking for feedback on the cikira brand

Postby taburgh » Tue Oct 16, 2012 2:48 pm

Greetings all. I met some of you on my maiden voyage to Chikot Lake last year.

I am looking to upgrade and am considering a 2010 cikira 18 ft TT. I'm researching reviews and found the maker has gone out of business and there are wet floor issues. Any thoughts, experiences or recommends? I've also considered the Heartland MPG 185 but am having to forfeit closet space.

Open to your thoughts. Tamara

can't say that I know anymore than you do about cikira. My two cents.......don't think I'd invest my $$ in something that went out of business. Now, if
some other better known brand bought them out and they carry a new name, then I would do the research on that. Good luck in your search.

The MPG was cramped feeling as I recall. And it has a wet bath. I think my 16BH has more useable room. You might look at Jayco, Sportmsmen Classic and Spree for trailers in the 18-20 foot range.

Never heard of it - but wouldn't rule it out. If it's local, look at it closely, check everything out. If it's what you want and you can get the right price, go for it. As to brands going out of business, so many have - from really good ones, to simply small ones that haven't been able to keep up with the big guys. But, if there has been water issues - make sure you check that carefully. Where and why and how?

Saw the dealer today and looked at the camper. You are correct, Bethers. He spoke honestly about cikira going bankrupt but he also said 40% of makers have gone out of business or bought out. He named a few well known brands that even a new rv-er like me recognized. thus i was okay with the bankruptcy part as the dealer would sell a warranty with repair guaranteed anywhere in the country.

But, alas, wasn't into the Cikira. It lacked all charm. So today learned a little more about the rv world and will search for another upgrade trailer that suits my style and price -- and an indoor toilet. have to stay under 3000# with my dodge caravan.

Thanks for the input.

Was talking to my mom after Our trip to the dealer. I told her I dont remember what possessed me to buy a camper and jump into rv'ing in the first place. never been rv'ing before but the summer of 2011, I just had to have one. Love the life now and want to try more dry camping in slightly --slightly-- more remote areas.

One more question: the dealer recommended I install a transmission cooler on my dodge van since I travel long distances and in the mountains. Any thoughts? Or should I start a new topic?

I would agree with the cooler, especially if you drive in the mountains.

Well, Tamara, don't know squat about trailers but do about cars and trucks...absolutely a trans cooler on your van. It's not cheap, but a whole lot cheaper than a new transmission. When and if you have one installed I would highly recomend a transmission temp gauge also. That way you know exactly what's going on with it temp wise.

Other than that it sure is good to hear from you! A hug for you and for your lovely mom, too.

Hey Sharon! Nice to hear from you. Mom and I have had a rough year so have been incognito for awhile. Her health took a tour into serious so we were battling that and missed the planned GTG in TX. Her illness created a lot of truama and drama with siblings . . . A nightmare summer. Also had to put down my Emma dog.

Mom recovered amazingly well so I took her to Denver to stay with a sister while I went down to Santa Fe and camped for a week at Santa Fe Skies campground. Nice place.

Will definitely get the trans cooler with temp gauge. Glad to know about that. Went over Raton pass to Santa Fe, which isn't that high, but was still concerned about the trans even though I didn't feel I was pushing the Van. I am purchasing a TT that wIll add another 800# to my tow but still another 500# under my max.

Appreciate the input - can always rely on "the gals" to be there for informed help.

So sorry to hear of your mom being sick...why do family have to make a tough time tougher on each other? I've seen it before and it's so sad. Glad to hear that she's better, tho. And then to have to lose your precious Emma on top of it. Yes, I guess you did have a terrible year! Glad to see that things are picking up and skies are a little brighter for you. Don't be such a stranger, we all have broad backs for you to vent to!!

Have you checked out the Casita? Not sure about the weight but they are fiberglass so should be fairly light.

Here is my 2 cents. If you are thinking of more remote camping, consider a different tow vehicle.

The Casita and Scamp both are great little, note little, campers. But they aren't lightweight. The 17' deluxe (with bathroom) is about 3800 pounds naked (no water, propane, food, clothes). Any TV should be set to tow maximum. Be sure the expense of adding coolers etc is going to be a good investment.

Glad your year of bad is turning the corner. Best of luck in your search!
