Extended warranties

Any of you out there have extended warranties? I'm looking at getting one for the rv, just now checking rates with different companies, and was wondering who you have yours with. Any information would be helpful to me in making my decision. It's a bit of an expense, but I'm thinking it will be good insurance in the long run, should anything major fail.

Personally I've never gotten one on anything I've bought. I figure I'll just take my chances, and for the most part I think it's a ripoff. Lots of fine print to sift thru. I have never regretted it.
Not sure how much an extended warranty on an RV runs, but perhaps you could take that same amount and set it aside for such purposes?
JMHO

Paulette, I have to agree with Lenora. There are too many things in fine print not covered, too many exceptions to the rule, yada, yada. I'd rather have a savings account for those things and take my chances.

Paulette, check out Good Sam. I had that for Bunkie. The two or three large companies doing that kind of warranty coverage have a good rep. They have to in order to stay in business. Check out the other technical RV forums. Those guys have a lot more experience with a lot more rigs that travel a lot more miles than most of us on this forum. A few here travel more than 3,000 miles a year, but most don't.

I know Beth puts a lot of miles on her class c and doesn't do ext wty. But a repair on a major engine failure for her Ford would be a lot less than on your rig - probably. Beth would never get an ext. wty. as she considers it a waste of money. But it might not be for you.

Just remembering you wheel issue last year or was it the year before. The cost for the extended wty 3 years or maybe 4 would have paid for that repair. The cost for the ext wty for my class c was not that much. Putting that in the bank would not have helped very much for a repair...less than 3 hours of labor. You just need to look at the age of your rig, what the labor cost is, usually that is your biggest expense, and then make the call. I know you are good at regular maintenance and that is what a lot of the repair issues involve. But you do put a lot of miles on when you hit the road for the summer. You just have to figure out what you can afford to do.

One shoe doesn't fit all.

As Birdie says, one shoe doesn't fit all. But look at the cost of the warranty and decide if you can put that aside annually towards the types of repairs - plus don't forget the deductible. And yes, READ the small print. Know exactly what you're getting. An extended warranty would have broken even for me the year I got the new fridge and microwave. Yep, broken EVEN. That's the time I thought I should have gotten one. But after paying the deductible, paying for the warranty, etc etc - it wouldn't have been a good deal. That was 2007, I believe. Now, possibly an extended warranty would have helped with the generator I removed. But, all the repairs on it were NOT covered - they would have covered replacing it - and they have to feel replacing was better than covering.

And as Birdie says, I agree with Lenora and Irmi - I don't believe that for most people extended warranties are worth it. Yes, there are the exceptions that make them worth it for some - but those are the exceptions or the companies wouldn't offer them at all.

Extended warranties are like casinos; the house is in the business to make money. If you think you need it then check out Good Sam's.

Okay. Thanks for,the replies. I guess I was just being a worry wart, remembering fondly last year when I replaced wheel bearings and ac units. Well, only one ac u it, but two times! It is a good chunk of money, and I'm sure could be put to better use, like in the fuel tank!

As I have nearly NO savings whatsoever, and no way to conribute to a savings account, and because I really am a worry wart, I DO have Good Sam's extended waranty plan. I would rather pay one chunk of money once a year than worry about what I would do if something major needed repair or replacement. Hopefully I will never need the insurance, as I have never needed the hundreds of thousands I have been forced to put into car/truck insurance over the years,,,BUT----peace of mind to me is worth the expense. We all have to do what we must do to allow for the most happiness possible!
