Tires

Tires

Postby Anniepoo » Sun Oct 02, 2011 3:09 pm

Well, my RV answered the 'how old are the tires' question by having one explode on me.

They're all ancient.
So, any recommendations on how to get oddball tires? They're 8 16.5 series E tires , I'm gonna need 7 of them.
When I die I'm gonna be cremated. I can't stand the idea of spending eternity in a box with no wheels.

I suggest you talk to any tire places near you and get quotes. And if, as you said in another post, that size is no longer availabe, find out what size can be used in it's place.

Just make sure you get rv rated tires. A tire store could possibly try to sell you tires not rated for the weight of your rv. Gotta watch those guys all the time!! :D The rating is important, or you'll be blowing out new tires and wondering why. Don't forget to remind them that the psi rating on the tires isn't necessarily what goes in them. There should be a sticker on the door or in the rv giving you the correct psi for your coach. And yes, there will be a comparable size for your rv. Might take some research, but if you get a good guy, they can do it. Good luck!

Go to www.tirerack.com They seem to have any kind of tire needed and have good prices, too....we were looking for tires for the Tundra and needed tires like the ones we have (50,000 miles...time for new treads... ;) ) Expensive as they are big and rated for hauling & towing....and this place had the ones we need....it's a place to check out...maybe they have what you need in RV tires, too...

Thanks for the tirerack tip - afraid they don't seem to have that size.

Well, glad I'm doing my homework. Fellow tried to sell me a tire this morning, it was 14 years old!

Found a place online. Ordered 3 new tires.
I'll replace the fronts and the spare. Then, a couple paychecks from now I'll replace the rear tires.

I feel your financial pain. I just replaced all 4 tires on my truck. OUCH. I replaced all since they were beyond the 50000 miles. certainly didn't need a blow out. Linda

Yah, I've 4 in the back (duals) , 2 front, spare.

I'm replacing fronts and spare now, will do the duals when I can afford it.

Be sure to put valve extenders on the inside dual tires so you can check them and put air. You can't always tell the inside tire is flat. On mine I have to have extenders on the outside tires too because the holes in the rim are so small.

I did just that and had to replace the extender on one side already! Actually had it removed entirely. I was told that they were a bad idea because they don't hold up. Mine less than a year. The other side seems to be ok so far but I keep a close eye on it.

I know extenders can leak but I don't know how else to put air in the tires. I always check if anyone changes one of my tires. I have had them not put them on tight enough.

Get the braided steel ones....knock wood, I've never had a problem with them. Granted, they're more bucks, but totally worth it.

I couldn't check my inner tires without extenders. So is worth the possibility of them leaking versus not being able to fill them if no matter what. And, yes, there are better extenders out there. I've never had a problem with the ones I have now - don't know if they're the kind Sharon mentioned - but a tire place put mine on free when I simply asked them to check my tires.
