Insurance question

Insurance question

Postby annk » Sun Oct 02, 2011 10:59 am

Is the insurance different for part timers and full timers? How does it work?
Any recommendations with regards to RV insurance carriers.

I have insurance for my Honda Pilot through State farm. Plan to call them and talk to them.
I do not mind going with someone else if the rates/coverage is better.

Yes, insurance is different for a full-timer. YOu want to make sure you have coverage for all the personal effects, also - which will be possible with the carriers that handle full-time. Three companies I recommend checking - the one in the ad above, the AARP Hartford now has full-time coverage, and many are happy with Progressive (I didn't like their full-time coverage, but you have to check and get all the info - and things are changing all the time).

I end up going with GMAC through Good Sam. I could not get Hartford through AARP as I am not a AARP member. the rate directly through Hartford are slightly higher.

The rates turned out to be pretty good and the coverage is excellent .. when the RV is in storage I pay less but sill have comprehensive coverage and more when i am actually taking trips. That works fine when I am not full time yet.
they also cover personal effects and provide trip interruption for up to 10 days.
While I was at it I went ahead and got their roadside assistance which is on a discounted rate and they will cover not only my RV but also my car and my son's because this is his legal address. I told them he is in CO but his legal mailing address is VA and they said he is covered too. The guy that I spoke with said I could download the app for roadside assistance on my android phone which will better help them pinpoint my location. Cool. I am doing the happy dance and my bank account is screeching. :0

I have GMAC with Good Sam, too, and also their roadside assistance/towing coverage thing. I have never needed them (knock knock) but I have heard from people who have used them that they are very good. I also have inside trailer stuff covered up to 5,000 dollars. AND, I got their extended waranty coverage for my trailer. I should be ok no matter what happens, hopefully. Some people are able to save what they would need to cover a dead refrigerator, say, but I find I am a horrible saver. I would rather pay so much each year to be covered fully for whatever might go toes up. But that's just me----many people are able to sail through life with no insurance whatsoever, or a minimal or required amount. My mind likes full coverage, so I don't have to suddenly come up with an exhorbitant amount of money to replace an axle, or something, in Podunk U.S.A. :)
