Where to put new tires??

I have one new (March 2016 is replacement date) tire on my motorhome that replaced one with a small cut in it.

Went to Rv dealer today to get oil change. They checked tires and said one of my inside duallies was cracked along the rim so I needed a new tire. Tire dealer said I needed to replace three other tires and maybe all older tires--5 in all because some were beginning to crack. Because I am short of $$$ after spending a lot of repairs and two new crowns on my teeth recently ($3,000 worth) so I said to just order 3. Will get two more later this year when I can afford it.

Now the tire guy said best tires should go on rear dual tires. I said I wanted two new tires on front. They argued against that vehemently.

So, am I nuts???

I'm sure not an expert but I have always heard that rear dual tires should be changed at the same time. I don't mean all 4 but each 2 should be changed at the same time. After saying that I am happier putting new tires on the front. I have put 2 new tires on the front and moved the older front to one side or the other in the back. Because of a front end problem that caused a tire problem my newest tires are in the front. I'm going to have to make this decision before too long because of the age of the back tires.

This might be a question for RVnet. Get them all stirred up. lol

If I was to have a flat or blow-out I would prefer it to be on the back. New tires on the front.

Always put best tires on the back is what I was told by my very reliable mechanic. The back tires control skids.

They are probably trying to keep the tread depth matched. A set of duals need to be the size as the tire next to it. If not the tires will not wear correctly.

That said as long as the rears are matched up put them how ever you wish.

If I was replacing 4 I'd do the rears then replace the steers as a set a little later provided they are in good shape now.

I am at tire dealer. First they told me they had to put them on the rear because California law requires this and they did not want to lose their license which is what would happen if they put them on the front.

But they could not find a copy of the law that said that.

So they called some law hotline that told them that was not true and that would not cause them to lose their license. So they put on the work order that I was insisting on putting them on the front.

I also could not find such a law online.

I understand about the expense, but unless it's a simple flat, I replace all my tires at once.
