acessing the internet

Such a journey in the cold from MA to FL. But I made it, after weeks of mostly staying in Walmart and Cracker Barrel parking lots. I managed to keep my water tanks from freezing, which is all I could think about at the time. But I really, really needed my internet to figure out where I was headed each day, where I could get propane, yada yada. But after sorting out my propane issues, my next one is internet. I've been paying for campgrounds, mostly because I can get wifi. I have two hotspot modems, Verizon mifi and Virgin Overdrive. But omg is it ever expensive to pay for time on those little devices! I thought prepaid would be a good idea, but it was a nightmare adding more data minutes to my plan. My fault for being such a data hog, but that's my story. Anyone have experience with other devices/services that work well for a lot of data for a wanna be boondocker?

I pay for my AT&t data on my phone as a hot spot or direct connect - it only costs me another $30 a month over my regular charges on the smartphone. Before that I had the monthly mifi with Verizon. Depends on how much you use. I try to do things that eat data when I'm on wifi somewhere. But I don't download and do things that make cg's mad either.

..
I have the $20/month (1Gb) auto renew on my iPad. Works for me.

I also bought a Verizon jetpack while on the last trip.
But I won't keep it up - it's $60/month for 3Gb.
Sure is easier, though, typing on a laptop vs. the iPad.

Yes, it was very cool. As little as I use the iPad though...just something else to break or schlepp around.
