Carbon Monoxide Kills

Carbon Monoxide Kills

Friend sent this to me. We could all use safety reminders now and then

RV Safety Tips from CarbonMonoxideKills.com
Use a carbon monoxide warning detector
Inspect your RV's chassis and generator exhaust system regularly
Inspect the RV for openings in the floor and sidewalls (seal any holes with silicone adhesive or have it repaired before using your generator again)
Inspect windows, door seals, and weather strips for effective seal
Yellow flames in propane-burning appliances (coach heaters, stoves, ovens, water heaters, etc.) indicate a lack of oxygen--determine the cause and correct it immediately
Do not operate your generator if the exhaust system is damaged in any way
Park your RV so that the exhaust can easily dissipate away from the vehicle--do not park next to high grass or weeds, buildings, or other obstructions
Be aware that shifting winds can cause exhaust to blow away from the coach at one moment, but under the coach in the next moment
When stopping for long periods of time, be aware of other vehicles around you that may have engines, refrigerators, or generators running
Do not sleep with the generator operating
Leave a roof vent open any time the generator is running (even during winter)
If you do not feel well, do not be fooled into thinking it is because you have been driving too long, you ate too much, or you are suffering from motion sickness--shut off the generator and step outside for fresh air
Have your built-in vacuum cleaner inspected to ensure that it does not exhaust on the underside of your RV
Consider parking in a "no generator" zone at RV rallies

Thanks for the reminder. It's always good to be careful of these things. Safety never costs, it always pays off.

Thanks for the heads up. One more thing that I will gladly (and have just remembered to) put on my list of things to get before I go out on the road.

Good reminder. I even open a vent fan when I am cooking inside.

My father lost his father and a 16-year-old brother from a faulty furnace in a camping trailer when he was 22. He was the oldest of 5 surviving children, and since his mother had died several years earlier, they had some rough times. I am very careful about CO.

I am kind of a safety first type person. I have 2 carbon monoxide detectors installed in my RV. I also have the built in propane sniffer which can also sound an alarm for more than just propane. It recently went bonkers when a couple left their truck and motorhome both running while they dumped at the station across from my camp lot at the beach in South Carolina. The exhaust poured into my screen door and set off my alarms even though my windows were open.

His truck was running pretty rough, like something was already wrong with the exhaust. I ran outside for fresher air and was going to ask them to shut off their engines in both vehicles, but they drove off and I was finally able to quiet my alarms.

I once broke down and they towed me to a closed repair place, it was 100F degrees and humid. I had to run the generator and AC all night to keep from perishing. I was super grateful to have one CO detector at the time, but I bought another one figuring two are better than one and I have them at both ends of the RV.
