Well I did it...broke something on the rig
I slammed the door shut to hard yesterday
and now the steps will not work...I don't know
how they work..so not sure if it is something I
can fix or have to take it to rv repair...does it
have one of those magic eye things or what?
Anyone out there help me...??

It should have a magnetic sensor on the Inside of the rv, close to the door. But it could be the motor, which is underneath where the steps attach to the rv frame. Not sure if that helps any.

Donna, last year something similar happened to our steps. I put my foot on the step, which at this point was under the motorhome, and applied pressure. I felt something move under my foot, like the motor was trying to engage, I opened the door to the motorhome and the steps worked. Maybe try that?

Find the motor and whack it with a rubber hammer. Might get it working, might not! I had to replace the one on my tiffin last summer. The new one doesn't have electric steps...I'm thankful for that!

Donna, I'm not exactly sure how it works, other than it senses when the door is closed or opened and causes the steps to retract or extend. It might be well worth calling the mobile repair person and seeing if they can talk you thru trouble shooting to see if it is the sensor or the motor. I know when I called someone last summer they were able to help me to at least get the steps retracted the whole way so I could drive it to a repair shop. Mine ended up being the motor itself and cost a couple hundred bucks to have it replaced.

Just another thought, if you have CoachNet, you can call them and they may be able to walk you through some steps to see if you can get it working.

The electric steps need to be sprayed with a lubricant. I think it's recommended once a month. Do you have the manual for the electric step? If you can't hear the motor trying to work it might be the motor. They work off the coach battery and the engine battery if the key is turned on. They are suppose to be wired so that they will retract if the engine is started.

I found several sites on the internet for rv electric step troubleshooting.

Mine did that last summer in Alaska....twice. The problem was the motor...intermittent something or other; had to have it replaced in Anchorage.

I went through the off and on working with mine and finally had to have the motor replaced. They really need to be lubricated because they are in a bind if they aren't. The lubricant comes in a spray can you can buy at an RV place. Spray all the bolts where they move and the gears under the step. I carry a yoga mat to use when I need to lay on the ground to see under my motorhome.

Silicone spray. Do not use WD-40.
