Garmin

I have a Garmin nuvi 265W and got an email it was time to update. When updating it says I don't have enough space to download the US and Canada, so I opted for, and this is their wording, 'the Lower 49 states'. Not sure what the 49th state is they are referring but assume Alaska. Anyhow, my question is; my Garmin has a slot for an SD card so when it says 'I don't have enough space' can I then put in the SD card and the overflow (?) will be installed on it? I don't know where my manual is and online search isn't any help.

I can't answer your specific question, but maybe this article can lead you to a solution?
(although it's for Europe, I would assume the theory is the same)

Well, I gave it a shot and tried to understand it. ;) Just seems a rip-off to pay the price for the US and Canada and then find out I have to cut something out because of storage space AND still pay the same price.
PS FYI- 1 hr 15 min and counting. And this is with cable internet.

When my friend Blake was here several months ago, he wanted me to update his Garmin. I looked around online for him and we determined it was just slightly more expensive to get an entire new unit.

Guess it would depend on which model was originally bought.

I had the same problem and my son took care of it. I don't know what he did. Sarah had posted about this one time and said something about removing some things to have more room. I don't have a clue how to do that. One of my complaints with the Garmin GPS is the amount of information you get with one. It's mostly trial and error.

I had paid about $84 for life time updates online and found out later that they consider life time 4 updates. It takes forever to download the updates. I'm talking over night.

I'm thinking my new smart phone will be the answer to updating my Garmin. But then I'm still learning to use my
new phone period. ;)

When I got the message that I did not have enough space to update my Garmin was really puzzled as I had not used it much nor had I saved anything (on purpose, anyway). Think I went to the Garmin web site and searched for how to free up space for update or something like that.
Turns out my Garmin had something like 33 languages on it. Deleting all but English freed up plenty of space for the update.

Two cautions:
1) Be sure you DO NOT delete any language you might ever want to use
2) I could not find a means of deleting both spoken and text in a single step - so had to do the delete in two steps. They may have improved that by now.

It was not difficult but did take a couple of hours. After purging all the unwanted languages, the update went smoothly.

There are other files, vehicles, images etc that can safely be deleted if you don't need them but I did not find it necessary to delete anything other than the excessive languages.

Will have to do a search on how to delete those.

This AM when I turned on my computer I got a pop up box from Garmin that there was an upgrade available. I clicked on it and it was an upgrade to a new voice called Samantha, and also the option to download the Canadian maps. I put an SD card into my Garmin and clicked to have both installed and it did recognize the SD and is using it. When it's finished I'll check into the deletes. Thanks Sarah.
