Shore Power Question

Re: Shore Power Question

Thank you EVERYONE! I have just ordered a SurgeGuard 30A protector with all the proper readings and timeout for the A/C. I also got a 30A extension cord. All was avail through Amazon at better than other prices. While I was there, I got some corner guard protectors (for the slides and their pointy corners) and a rug for the step. :D

I so appreciate all the suggestions and insights. Mitch gets extra thanks for bearing with me as I asked a whole bunch of questions...and helping me figure out how to get the answers! I hate it when I am so unknowledgeable that I don't even know how to ask the right questions...   :?:

The guys on RV.net just love for someone to ask a beginners question so they can say that it's been answered many times and you can do a search for the answer. Makes their day.

This is an inexpensive meter that I keep plugged into an outlet so I can see that I am getting enough electricty. In some campgrounds when it's hot and everyone is using their air conditioners you won't be getting enough electricity. If you hear your air conditioner struggling you need to turn it off. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/it ... eter/29375

If it was me, I would go to a trailer place to be sure I got the right kind of cord. I was told to not use even the heavy duty extention cords you can buy at Walley World, but to use the kind you buy at a trailer place, usually black and are as big around as the cord from your trailer. Wouldn't want to cause any of your appliances to not work because you didn't have enough power and u harmed them.

If you get the cord from the RV section in Wal-Mart I think they are the same, just don't get an ordinary heavy duty extension cord.

The one I ordered from Amazon is from an RV supplies store...I am darned if I can remember the name of the company, but it's a big one and the name starts with a C. At any rate, it's a reliable RV place. So I'm confident it will work and be safe. I already had one problem with the wrong extension and coiling it, so I'll not repeat that stoopdity!!

Again, thanks for all the advice!!!!

Something else I didn't know until it was posted on this Forum - turn the power OFF at the pedestal while you're plugging into it and your trailer. Turn it back ON only when all is securely plugged in. (Did I remember that right?)

Yeah, I think I read that in one of the links you sent yesterday. Wouldnt have thought of that m'self. So I will follow the directions both when plugging in and when unplugging. Makes sense. We don't turn on hair dryer switches before we plug into the wall, so this makes perfect sense....

Absolutely right Mitch...and turn off the breaker before you un-plug to leave, too. Also, ( and Beth caught me on this one!! I know better, really I do!!), make sure you're not touching the electrical pedestal with one hand while you un-plug or turn a breaker with the other. Makes a really nice clear path for electrocution if there's a bare wire touching any where.

And something I learned on the way down to the AR GTG last fall - open the box CAREFULLY! I just jumped right on it and was attacked by a swarm of hornets nesting inside. Luckily, I guess I'm not allergic!

Not that that has anything to do with power - but it does the power post. ;)

Yep, and another thing not directly related, but in the same area is the water connection. Some people (Mitch) spray it with bleach, I don't, but I do turn it on and back off, to make sure water comes out before connecting to it, just to wash out any spider webs, bugs and doggie pee! :o :?

Doggie Pee? Them's must be tall dogs to reach up that high!!! Or are the faucets down on ground level? :o :o I think I like both ideas actually...spray it with bleach and then let it run a bit. :o :o
