Converting water heater to work on electric.

I didn't do it myself, but watched it being done and it really looked simple. I also didn't buy it, and never had the instructions in my own hands, so again, can't say how easy they are to follow. The reviews showed people feeling it was easy - although all said to read all the directions first - which is always a good idea, IMO. If I purchased the one put on mine, I belive I could have done it myself- but would have preferred supervising someone with a tad more knowledge after I read all the instructions and knew what was supposed to be done :)

Using both really heats the water fast BUT on our TH the electric cord is located above the water heater compartment. I tried it when we first bought this rv and evacuated for one of the hurricanes, there were three of us wanting showers, luckily my nephew noticed that the electric cord was heating up due to the hot air coming out of the vent in the water heater compartment, so I now know to only heat the water with gas if I'm not plugged in.

With my conversion - the electric cord is outside and away from the hot water heater. So that isn't a concern for me - have the cord plugged in whenever I'm hooked up to electric for any period of time. I never use it with the propane, no need to - unless I needed it to heat up quickly the first time - cuz when on electric, it stays hot all the time. When I use it on gas, I only turn the gas on when I want to heat the water - to conserve propane. And wouldn't put the electric on if it wasn't being paid for. Except for that period when the gas part wasn't working - which is how I got this to begin with.

Oh, for Pete's sake - quit trying to confuse me.
I'm still contemplating that switch in the outside compartment...

No Beth, I'm talking about my 50A power cord, it's directly above my water heater compartment door.

Sometimes I think the people who make things don't think them through, eh?

And confusion is my middle name. Well it should be.

If I have to get a new annode rod on Wednesday, I will check out the conversion kits.

OK..I also said this on the anode rod thread. I called Atwood today and the tech, of course, recommended replacing the whole tank to convert it  I can't even remember how much he said it was. After I heard $300 something, I said, "that's not gonna happen!" I have been commiserating with a couple of my workamper buddies and we think we can do it. Ken brought over an accessories catalog. It shows them in pkgs so can't really tell much about them. It does say that it takes about 30 mins to intall. Sounds good to me! They seemed a bit pricey, but will either order online or see if a small local business will price match ;) I figure for the price of a couple of tanks of propane I could have the conversion kit and save money in the long run :D

Workamper Joe found a Camco conversion kit on Craigslist for me. Workamper Ken and I drove out to Queen Creek on Wed to buy it. It costs $99 at JC Whitney and I got it for $40. It was new and still in the pkg, complete with instructions. We had spent all morning trying to find a water leak and think we found it and maybe have it fixed. Got the water heater flushed. By the time we got back, we had time to get the heater rod installed and put the rest on hold. Hoping the weather doesn't keep us from finishing the project this weekend. Looking forward to being able to heat my water with electricity instead of propane :D

BMF Ken and I finished installing the Camco conversion kit today. I think we did a great job! We ran the plug up through my night stand to plug in put the on/off switch on the front of it, under the drawer. We cut away some of the styrofoam and put the thermostat on the back side of the water heater. Drilled a 1/2" hole in the front panel and ran the wires through there to the rod and for ground wire. I will try to take photos tomorrow. It's so nice to have hot water on demand :D Thanks for the encouragement!

I had a couple of guesses for BMF, but decided to Google it just to see what came up:

1.) BMF Wheels – Truck Wheels, Lifted Truck Wheels, Off Road Truck
2.) Bayesian Mail Filter - software
3.) BIWAKO MILLENNIUM FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE, BARRIER-FREE AND RIGHTS-BASED SOCIETY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC
4.) Black Mafia Family (BMF), was a drug trafficking organization originally based out of Detroit, Michigan.
5.) British Military Fitness membership, all BMF instructors are either serving or are ex-army
6.) Bawa Muhaiyaddeen Fellowship

Somehow I don't think those fit, so I'm gonna guess Best Male Friend, although, I did consider the possibility of Bad MF, thinking he might be a tough guy.
