Oh, I use mine all the time while on the road. I can set the tomtom to show a map reflecting WHERE I am in a given journey, so I know if I'm halfway, etc. It also tells me -- at the speed I'm driving -- how much time until I reach my destination and the estimated arrival time. Waaaay cool.
My GPS also gives me vocal turn-by-turn directions. It's a life-saver in urban areas on freeways tells me when to be in the left lane, right lane, etc. to transition from freeway to freeway (and avoid getting "herded" the wrong direction when there is a major highway split. LOL). People who travel as couples have a "navigator" to look at maps to help make those transitions. I have none and trying to follow a map whilst keeping my eyes on the road is nearly impossible.
