WiFi extender

WiFi extender

Postby sharon » Thu Nov 21, 2013 7:46 pm

I know a lot and I can do a lot but this stuff gives me a headache. Does anyone know if this would work in, say, a campground where the wifi signal is weak? Or a parking lot where there is free wifi in the building but not strong enough to make it out to the lot.

Sharon, that's what I have: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10922&start=15&hilit=amped#p144217

It works great. I had a better signal from my rv at the LuLu Belle in AK than they had in the office next to the router! Mitch purchased it for her place, and now has a signal in her bedroom, and I believe Vickie said she got a better signal from her rig. Yes, it works. Some tried to tell me it wouldn't work - as long as you have the password to get into the network, it works. Easy to set up. I have had to occasionally re-set it - but that's easy enough, also. Highly recommend, and the price on CostCo looks good.

Does the wifi extender automatically find the networks in your area as you move around from, say, park to park, giving you a boost to the closest one, or is it for setting up in a fixed location like your home?

If you plug in the one I have, it will automatically find all WiFi networks.

Perfect. I wanted to make sure I understood that they worked that way. Thanks, Beth.

cantenna

Postby Anniepoo » Wed Dec 04, 2013 3:28 pm

wifi repeaters certainly work. You'll need a plug in for it I assume?

I associate them with hipster high tech 'campuses' where they're used to extend wifi out into big outdoor areas.

The repeater is basically a wifi 'card' that picks up the signal and feeds it to a new wifi hub.

A cheaper and oh fun I made it myself alternative is a cantenna. better antenna = longer range.
This won't work as well as a repeater, but definitely will make a difference.

googling 'pringles can antenna' will also give you lots of references.

Just a fyi. I wasn't using my extender here. My friend and neighbor talked about being dropped from the wifi all the time and then discovered using her Verizon card, she'd gone over her limit. So, I set up my extender - discovered I'm going much faster on my phone and other devices AND gave her the code I set for it here and she's not had a problem since - gotta love technology.
