Fridge on Propane ??

Fridge on Propane ??

Postby bluepinecones » Tue Jan 15, 2013 7:37 pm

Until Magic had to be moved today due to flooding, the only times I've used propane to operate the fridge has been while driving on the 3 relatively short trips I've made. I had already loaded the freezer for upcoming trip so left it running. Questions are how long will it last and does the propane keep it as cool as it would be when hooked up with electric?

As long as your tank has propane, it should be fine until you can get on the road.

Mine has run on propane more then half my time on the road this winter, its setting on propane now. Works great, no worries, everything stays solidily frozen, in fact ice cream usually to hard to dip   and frig stuff is good, my water always very cold short time after refilling bottles. As Tina said, frig. uses very little propane, I find.

It will be fine, just because you aren't there, doesn't mean it won't work correctly. You did have it on the Auto setting didn't you? Eddie, probably checked that, he is so good and seems to think of everything.

You have enough to think about, don't look for more, ok? Just hoping you can get out of there quickly. Everything will be ok, Sarah, no matter what, or how bad we think things are, they always work out and all our worries, usually have nothing to do with outcome, except we might get sick from them.

Take care,
CArol :)

Hate to write this !!!!!!!

Battery charge is a concern, battery usually needs recharging in about a week or so, if you have two, less for one. If you can get out this wk end you should be ok. driving will recharge battery, so don't waste time plugging into electric, just get yourself heading south !!!!

I had not used my fridge on propane for extended periods of time until boondocking for three weeks last fall. I discovered that that you can not disconnect the house batteries (if you have a battery disconnect on your rig) to save the batteries if the fridge is running on propane - the fridge will not run on propane with the batteries disconnected.

I do not know why this is true, but it is and we learned this the hard way.

Just make sure you leave the battery switch on. Mine has a little red light on it to show it is on and working.

The first time i used my refrigerator I happened to take it into the dealer for some warranty work after spending three days at a ful hookup site. The dealer pointed out that if I had stuff in the freezer and refrig that i needed to turn the battery on and showed me where the button was. Even though the refrigerator was running on propane, it did need a little power.

Thank you.
Everything in freezer was okay.
Batteries were down a little and needed some water - had not checked them in a while.
Tina checked the propane level tonight - gauge is very difficult for me to see and poorly located at least for my eyes and back. I'm down to about half tank. Not sure how much of that was consumed by fridge and how much by furnace the few times I tried it before giving up (alarm problem).

Sarah, I'll probably confuse you more here. Your propane tank only gets filled to about 3/4's of it's capacity. So if you have 1/2 left you've only used about 1/4 tank. You should also show the level on the tank in your rv panel inside. On the same panel that shows you the level of your batteries and black and grey tanks. If your actual propane tank has a gauge, that's usually better, but the inside one gives you a ball park.

And you really need to get someone to take care of your furnace setting off the alarm problem.

Thanks Beth. I just located the one inside. The reading doesn't match the outside gauge - off by 1/4 tank.

After the bad experience with RV shop at home, don't trust them. Will try the one in Guntersville after I get back home as several things still need attention..
