Mark called me this morning saying Oscar had gotten into something and torn his face and was bleeding. Well, Oscar was in bed when I left for work. He jumped in my spot as soon as I got up. So I had no clue what he was talking about.



Well, a trip to the vet later, and putting him to sleep to clean out the wound, they decided it was a hot spot, possibly from a sting or bite that he scratched until he opened it up. He's been asleep on the bed since he got home. Spoiled rotten puppy.

Poor Oscar. Now that he's got a boo boo he'll have to get special lovin. (like he didn't get any before! )

Poor baby! That probably hurt a lot before it opened up! Animals can get nasty infections from puncture wounds. I had a cat when I was a kid that was in fights all the time and would get infections from the bites. Mostly around his ears and face but he actually lost a back claw (root and all) from an infection. It never grew back.

Hope he is all better soon!

That looks painful. I wish Oscar a speedy recovery. I am curious, will his hair grow back?

He was eating breakfast when I left this morning. That's a good sign.

The wound wasn't as big as I originally thought once they got it cleaned up, and not nearly as swollen. He will have a scar and a bare spot, but I don't think it will be too noticeable.

Oscar was still a little wobbly on his feet when we picked him up. And he's my backseat driver, having to stand up and check everything out every time we stop, change lanes or even turn on the turn signal. Last night... not so much. He sleep pretty much all evening but by time I went to bed was looking more alert (of course). The funny thing is Jazz was sleeping even harder than Oscar. I startled her at one point, making her jump when I put my hand on her haunch. My guard dogs were so on the job last night - NOT!

Poor baby. Lots of love and sympathy required. Guard dogs???? The only thing that would wake Sophie up at night is if someone tried to move her and Buddy is so old that he's decided that its now my job to protect him.

Brother, my cat that had the abscess, had an almost 3" open sore by the time I got him to the vet. Poor thing had to stay in a cage with a plastic collar for about a month. He is all healed up and the hair is growing back.

I hope that we don't have to resort to the Cone of Indignity (Elizabethan collar) with Oscar - his is so big he can take out half the furniture and scrapes the walls in the hallway.

same thing happened to a cat I had many years ago, the vet lanced it open and cut out the dead skin and the area was an open gaping wound you could
see all the way to the muscle a big 3" in diameter, seriously, there was NO SKIN in that area. Vet said it would close up and heal and I would never know
it was there. No scar. He was right, but that cat sure hated being locked up and wearing a cone during that healing process.( I hated it too)

I hope you can find a way around the cone - one of my last two dogs would bang her head against a wall until the cone broke and she needed another trip to the vet for the banging damage. So, I'm not a big fan of them - without considering the wall damage Here's a big hug to Oscar from Peaches.

I think they have softer, more flexible cones now.

Unfortunately a soft collar would have to be so big that it would flop over and the bite not collar wouldn't prevent him from scratching his face. So far, we are doing ok without one. The main thing I had to watch for is when we first come home, he runs into the hall and does what we call wall diving - rubs down the wall (we have the sand texture walls) and then rubs on the carpet. I had to fuss at him when he flipped over to that side and started rubbing his face.

The wound is looking much better this morning. The spray is helping to dry it up.

Maggie, so glad that Oscar is doing better this morning. Give Jazzy a hug from me. Oscar has probably out rated her in hugs the past couple of days. Looking forward to meeting both of your furbabies.
