Anybody use a Patio Door dog door? I'm thinking of getting one for my window wall so my dogs can go in and out while I'm at work. Just wondered if anybody has had any expereince with them.

oh yes, I have a funny story..........
back when I lived in Colorado, I had a dog door and one night when we went to
bed I hear the flap move but all the dogs were on the bed with me. Seconds
later I smell SKUNK, the dogs all perked up their heads and I said DON"T MOVE!
That skunk waddled down the hallway into the kitchen and cleaned out all the
dog dishes, (yes, some still had kibble) waddled back down and out the dog door.
It never sprayed but it took me 3 days to get the stink out of my sinuses. The
house aired out with no problem but after that I remembered to always shut the
panel on the door at night and when I wasn't home.
Another time I locked the keys in the house, layed down on the porch and reached
up through the dog door and opened my door. I do like having a dog door though.
After the divorce the ex outfitted his place with a dog door leading into an outside
chainlink kennel so no critters could get in and the dogs could come and go while
he was gone.

We've considered putting a dog door in, but for reasons like Ava experienced, we haven't. I'm always afraid of small critters or snakes coming in it.

Had one in my houses - loved it. Never had anything that wasn't supposed to come in. We did shut and lock it when the weather was really bad and usually overnight (in case the weather got bad - this was in WI). While Ava has a lovely, funny story, that doesn't really happen often. Mine was in a regular door though - had to have a double one - cuz it was the back door and screen door - put one in each. Had to put a bigger one in when I got Tips - ha - he was too big for the small size that I already had. One of the things I missed most on the road - having a large yard for them to run and play in - I had to get leashes and walk them. Better for me - but hey, I was lazy and they loved it.

Here is a link to a site where you can get a dog door with a sensor on it so only your dog can come and go thru it...

http://www.topsellingpetsupplies.com/dog-doors.aspx

"Electric Flap Dog Doors - Grant your pet private access to your home, while keeping unwanted animals out! Electric flap doors come equipped with a self-locking system that will automatically unlock your dog door each time Fido approaches. The door opens when it is activated by the automatic sensor attached to your dog's collar, it will immediately lock once your pet has re-entered the house.

Automatic Patio Dog Door - This system is for use with sliding patio doors and is installed on the inside track. Automatic patio dog doors are activated by a sensor attached to your dog's collar. The self-locking system automatically slides the door open each time Fido approaches and locks it each time he re-enters."
