Pill Pockets

This may be old hat to most but it is new to me.
Nicky has been sick this week and has to take 2 pills/day. This is a dog that can spit out a pill no matter how tightly it is wrapped in cheese, peanut butter, etc. Also not cooperative in attempts to force pills down his throat. Mentioned the problem to a friend who suggested a product called "Pill Pockets" available at PetSmart.
I was totally amazed - worked like a charm. He gulped the pill pocket down without even trying to dislodge the pill. I highly recommend the product if you have a problem fur baby when it comes to taking pills.

Weatherby takes "happy pills" and the vet told me about these, but I just use a small amount of cheese and he takes it, but if I remember next time I go to PetSmart I'll get some.

I had some of those, but I still have to resort to shoving the pill down
Bandits throat cause he wants to chew the pill pocket even though its
soft. I've not tried it on the girls cause they haven't had to take any
pills yet.

I haven't tried these yet, but have looked at them in the store. My daughter who used to work with a vet told me that the dogs you have to put the pill way back in their throat, hold the mouth closed and blow in their face, at the same time massaging their throats. She claims it works like a charm--don't know haven['t tried it with Emma. She loves peanut butter and since I started using it, no more spitting out pills, which I have to cut into small pieces to begin with because of the size of her throat.
Good luck with getting the pills down your furbaby.

Wish they would have had those when we were trying to give our one Boston pills...she could detect a pill a mile away and won't even take a treat that one was buried in. Peanutbutter and bread balls do the trick with Radar.

Pill pockets are awesome! Another tip for those dogs who have "pill radar" (my Dawson has this!)... have two pieces of cheese/favorite soft treat/lunck meat, ect ready + the pill (wrapped in a pill pocket). Feed the dog the cheese, the quickly hand him/her the pill pocket, while holding the last piece of cheese right in front of them... they will quickly swallow the pill and be so focused on the last piece of cheese, that they won't even know it's in there :-)

I've always been able to make peanut butter or any soft goodie work. I know about those, though, and should the time ever come where nothing else works that I already have in the house, I'll be happy to get them. Glad they worked so well for you with Nicky.

Will not tell the story of my last cat and pills. I became an expert at the back of throat, hold mouth, massage throat. But sometimes he still beat me!

I have to give Charley (Standard Poodle) 2 pills after all his meals and I feed him 3 times a day! I've found if I slide them in at the side of his mouth and get under his tongue I can get them right down. The other day I missed and didn't notice he hadn't swallowed one and I was already washing my hands when he spit it out. I said OH Charley! and he looked at me, reached down and got the pill and took it. He didn't want to upset his Mom I guess.
I feed him 3 times a day in hopes that the smaller meals will keep him from bloating a 4th time. The vets said they can't save him again as his esophagus is to fragile from all the previous tubings.

That's pretty funny! But poor Charley. You're a good Mommy.

Chewy's such a little garbage disposal (like me! ) that she takes her twice a day pills like a champ, rolled in cheese or whatever is handy.
