Dental Cleaning and Extraction

Tomorrow, Wednesday, my 15 1/2- year-old cockapoo Krissi will undergo dental cleaning and extraction of 8-10 or more teeth. I'm petrified to have her undergo general anesthesia at her age and be in pain after, but I feel I have no choice. The vet said bacteria from bad teeth can get into the blood stream and cause other problems in the body. I wish her teeth hadn't gotten so bad. She's had expensive cleanings before, but it just seemed impossible to brush very well in between. The same thing happened with a little poodle-X I had before Krissi. I don't know if the vet didn't give her a strong enough pain med or what. But she was in terrible pain and crying on the 35-mile drive home. What traumatized me so much is that she died of old age less than 3 months later so she went through all of it for nothing. Because of that experience, I worry so much about Krissi tomorrow. Prayers for Krissi to do well during the procedure and that her pain will be controlled afterward would be very much appreciated.

I will be thinking of you Sandi. It is so hard to make those dental/surgery decision as they get older. Bad teeth and gums has its own detrimental effect on their body. As in so many things on life there are no crystal balls to foresee the future for many of our choices :? and coincidental occurrences are not proof of cause and effect regardless in and of them selves regardless of how our minds seem to interpret them. I vote for good pain meds!

Nicky and I are sending positive energy for both of you.
I just went thru the same concerns with Nicky. Teeth cleaning followed by surgery.

Saying a prayer for Krissi that all goes well. They have excellent ways of monitoring the dogs while under anesthesia and post op. As far as her age, we are never given any guarantees on how long we'll have them with us. So we just do the best we can for them and pray.

Peaches and I will be thinking of Krissi tomorrow. Hate that our pups have to be put out for their dental.

Sandi, My dog had 6 teeth removed and a cleaning and they sent me home with antibiotics and some pain pills. She was alert and eager to come home when I picked her up after lunch She never required any pain med but I gave her the antibiotics. She had NO distress and was eating just fine the next day. She is 12. So I hope Krissi does as well

Yay Krissi!! We just got home and she did great. Instead of 8-10 or more extractions, it was only 3. The vet said her blood work results were so good she couldn't believe they were from a 15 1/2-year-old dog. Krissi just ate her regular dinner and now wants to go to bed because she knows she gets treats. Thank you all who responded with thoughts and prayers. They obviously worked.
